Jürgen Klopp hopes Daniel Sturridge can return for Merseyside derby cameo via The Guardian

• ‘Having Daniel Sturridge for 20 minutes against Everton would be fantastic’
• Emre Can also in contention for Goodison Park after knee injury
Jürgen Klopp will monitor Daniel Sturridge over the next 48 hours to see if he can coax a cameo out of the England striker in Monday’s Merseyside derby. Sturridge has missed Liverpool’s past five matches with a calf injury but stepped up his recovery during the week and, with the short trip to Goodison Park not taking place until the evening, has time to prove he can play some part.

Klopp believes the 27-year-old could fill the role of super-sub provided he is passed fit. “He cannot be 100% but having Daniel Sturridge for 20 minutes would be fantastic,” he said. “If he is available he will be involved. Until now he’s made four pitch sessions with the rehab coach. It would be nice if he could be part of my department … the pitch training that I’m responsible for. Maybe we can involve him today.”

Ronald Koeman finds some Everton’s spirit in nick of time for derby | Paul Wilson via The Guardian

The blue side of Liverpool has not been able to celebrate victory in the derby since 2010 but Everton’s midweek win against Arsenal has shown them the way for Monday night
Ashley Williams’s 86th-minute winner against Arsenal on Tuesday was his first goal for Everton and the surge of blue pride it provoked could not have been better timed. It would be overstating the case to suggest Ronald Koeman and his players can now go into Monday’s Merseyside derby brim full of confidence, especially with Phil Jagielka suspended as a result of the last-minute mayhem in the Arsenal match, but at least the cloud of gloom that was beginning to surround Goodison has been lifted.

Before the Arsenal victory Koeman had been worrying aloud that his players were not strong enough to stand up to Watford, never mind Liverpool. It was a fair point. Everton’s encouraging start to the season had been squandered through defeats at Dean Court, Turf Moor, St Mary’s and Vicarage Road, not to mention the boos that were heard at home to Swansea before a late Séamus Coleman equaliser prevented the relegation strugglers escaping with an unlikely three points.
