Liverpool find the finish to take the edge off Everton’s furious intent | Paul Wilson via The Guardian

Enforced goalkeeping change is bad luck on Ronald Koeman’s side but they could not say result is a false one on the balance of scoring chances created
Everyone in the Everton camp agreed that to have a chance in this derby it would be necessary to start against Liverpool the way they finished against Arsenal. Not literally, of course, there would be no need to go down to 10 men and endure heart-in-the-mouth moments through having to block shots on the line, but Everton needed to get out of the starting blocks early and display the controlled aggression that brought them the points last Tuesday.

“Toe to toe and face to face,” was how Ronald Koeman put it, which was perhaps unnecessary advice for the fixture that holds the Premier League record for red cards. The first few minutes were predictably breathless, with Romelu Lukaku winning his fair share of aerial challenges but finding few team‑mates in sufficiently close support, and James McCarthy putting so much crunch into his tackles one feared the ball would sooner or later require first-aid treatment.

Jürgen Klopp praises Daniel Sturridge for helping Liverpool to derby victory via The Guardian

• Manager says striker who had hand in goal ‘helped us a lot in a difficult game’
• Everton’s Ronald Koeman says his side ‘did not deserve a defeat’
Jürgen Klopp paid tribute to Daniel Sturridge for helping to decide the Merseyside derby in stoppage time after an inadequate amount of preparation. The substitute’s shot came back off Joel Robles and a post to allow Sadio Mané to snatch a late winner, and the Liverpool manager admitted it was difficult to know when to send Sturridge on when the game was so intense and he had only completed a couple of training sessions.

“When you have Daniel on the bench you are always thinking about when is the right time to bring him on,” Klopp said. “It is an unusual situation but at the same time a good option when you can bring on his fresh legs when the game is so tight. He helped us a lot tonight in a difficult game.”
