Leicester’s gloom darkens after Romelu Lukaku seals win for Everton via The Guardian

After the last match between these teams at the King Power Stadium in May, Leicester were presented with the Premier League trophy amid unforgettable joy; here there was only a sad contrast between the title-winners and the current Leicester side. Everton did not need to excel to beat the champions and claim a deserved win, only their second win in eight Premier League games. Kevin Mirallas and Romelu Lukaku helped themselves to a goal each in the second half.

This low-quality contest made for particularly painful viewing for spectators supporting the home side. That included Jamie Vardy, who sat in the stands as he began his three-match suspension for his sending off against Stoke City. Leicester were so aggrieved at the Football Association’s rejection of an appeal against that ban that the club distributed 3,000 Vardy masks before kick-off as a form of protest. Vardy’s punishment must have felt particularly severe in view of the calibre of play he had to watch thereafter.
