Martinez describes Everton’s eighth home loss as a “one-off” via Royal Blue Mersey

The Blues are a trainwreck at Goodison Park

Roberto Martinez's press conferences never cease to amaze. His blinding positivism is now shining right into his eyes instead. Everton looked dismal without anchor Gareth Barry and struggled to string a decent series of passes together all game long. Arsenal on the other hand looked like they were out for revenge after getting knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League in the last few days.

The game was 2-0 at halftime to the visitors, and could have easily been worse. The Blues simply never got going, and between poor passes and general misdirection, they never stood a chance against the Gunners who are trying to revive their title chase.

Everton have now lost eight of the sixteen home games they've played this season, the first time they've hit that mark since the 1996-97 season.

After the game, this is what Roberto had to say –

"We have never performed in this manner. The disappointment of today is that we were second best. I thought Arsenal had a bigger bite and more intensity. We looked like the team who'd had an extra game so it was so disappointing in contrast to the performance seven days ago.

"We were very very slow in our build up and were reactive, we didn't anticipate any play. It was a fearful performance.

"We had a big player missing, Gareth Barry is someone that gives you something extra but that is not an excuse.

"We never got a platform in the game and we were ineffective with the things we were usually good at. Arsenal were better than us in every aspect of the performance."

He also explained his thought behind switching to a back-three at the half –

"When you lose the ball so quickly, you leave yourself open and we never looked like being able to cope with the movement of Arsenal. I thought an extra man in a deeper position could help us.

"But, it wasn't enough to get us into the game – you have to compete and show the intensity that we had seven days ago."

Everton struggle mightily, Arsenal dominates at Goodison Park via Royal Blue Mersey

It may have been the Toffees worst performance all season.

There are many ways for your football team to disappoint you. For Everton, this time around they did it by putting together what may have been their worst 90 minutes of the 2015-16 season after such an exciting win a week ago. The Toffees looked uncomfortable all day during their 2-0 loss to Arsenal at Goodison Park on Saturday.

While both halves were awful for the hosts, it was the opening 45 minutes that really left a lot to be desired. At the very beginning, it looked like an exciting Everton side that fancied scoring at least once or twice on the day, but that feeling quickly disintegrated.

After not even seven minutes, Danny Welbeck took a pass from Alexis Sanchez, dribbled around Joel Robles and slotted the ball into the net, making it 1-0 Arsenal with little effort. Near the end of the half, Alex Iwobi doubled the lead with a 42nd minute strike between Robles' legs on a breakaway. It proved to be an insurmountable deficit.

There weren't any real bright spots for Everton on this day. Romelu Lukaku had a tough battle with Gabriel Paulista throughout the match and struggled to get service. Fan favorite Mo Besic was anonymous in his 45 minutes on the pitch. Joel Robles seemed out of sync with his defense at times. If asked to pick, you would be forced to look at Aaron Lennon and Ross Barkley as at least serviceable at times, but with little working around them it's tough to even be happy with that.

The only time at which the Toffees looked dangerous was right after Gerard Deulofeu was brought on. A ball he played into the box led to a collision between Lukaku and goalkeeper David Ospina. While the big Belgian was no worse for the wear, the 27-year-old Colombian keeper was definitely hurt and noticeably limping for the remainder of the match. Immediately following that incident, Phil Jagielka had a great chance on goal off of a corner, but missed an open net.

Manager Roberto Martinez had made an adjustment at halftime to bring on John Stones and take off Besic in order to go with three at the back and, one would think, lead to more chances in the Arsenal box. But that never really happened. Sure, Everton had more possession that the Gunners in the second half, but it didn't turn into shots. It was more because Arsenal was allowing them to have control than it was because Everton earned it.

What else can we say at this point that hasn't already been said? Everton is having the same issues now that they were back in the fall. They stink at home and they stink on defense. Martinez continues to play football the way he wants to and it's not working. There need to be adjustments.

Do something to make these league games seem as if they are worth something. Just because this team beat Chelsea last week in the FA Cup does not mean they were the right team to play against Arsenal. Try something new. Tom Cleverley wasn't particularly good last week. Give Oumar Niasse or Gerard Deulofeu a start. Give Brendan Galloway another run in the squad. Change it up.

We head into an international break now. Everton won't be back on the pitch together until April 3rd when they take on Machester United at Old Trafford.

Everton vs Arsenal: Rate The Players & Manager via Royal Blue Mersey

Were you impressed by anyone in this loss?

Everton were embarrassingly flat at home as they hosted an Arsenal side that had been knocked out of two competitions in the last week. The Blues looked more than well-rested after playing last Saturday, in fact, they looked comatose for long periods of this game. Gareth Barry might receive a lot of flak from all quarters, but without him Everton were a rudderless dinghy caught up in the tumult of the Gunners vengeance.

In the end, fans will be surprised that Everton only lost by two in a game they were desperately outclassed. New owner Farhad Moshiri will have certainly seen enough after attending his second game at Goodison Park, where the Blues have now lost eight times this season.

Manager Roberto Martinez only used two of the subs at his disposal, with John Stones coming on for Muhamed Besic at halftime as the Blues went with a back-three for the second half. Gerard Deulofeu also came on for Ross Barkley.

Everton vs Arsenal: Roberto Martinez Pre-Match Quotes via Royal Blue Mersey

"Wembley is a reward for our fans and we're looking forward to seeing how good we can be in that environment" – says gaffer

Thursday morning Everton manager Roberto Martinez sat down with the assembled media at Finch Firm to preview Arsenal's trip to Goodison Park and it was the first chance to hear from the Spaniard since the Toffees booked their place at Wembley.

"Wembley is a reward for our fans and we're looking forward to seeing how good we can be in that environment."

But the manager was keen not to put all his eggs in one basket, "No matter what the competition, we need to perform in the best possible way."

Focusing on Saturday's clash, Martinez was very complimentary of his opposite number:

"I know what Arsene Wenger has done as a manger, bringing a very clear way of working, a completely different new approach to football. The management he brought into the British game has changed British football. What he has achieved at Arsenal is a model that many, many footballing people have been inspired by.

"The short term situation of one or two results sometimes overshadows the incredible work over the years. The way you are as a manager, defensive, attacking, I think the style Arsene Wenger represents is something that shouldn’t be just put aside. For me, it is a reflection of the modern times that we are so easily led to criticise a manager that has done incredible things in the game."

"They are a team, who in my eyes, are still in with a real good opportunity to win the league," said the Blues boss. "I know a lot has been said about Leicester, and rightly so, because of the distance they have. The five-point lead they have at this moment is a huge gap, but with the three-point system, the gap is smaller than you think. I feel Arsenal are still strong title contenders and that's what we're going to be facing at Goodison."

In terms of team news, Everton will be without Gareth Barry who is suspended after his red card against Chelsea. Barry has covered the second most distance in the Premier League so far this season and regarding his absence his manager looked to remain positive:

"I think it's an interesting stat. I don't think many people would come up with that through watching Gareth, but it's not just the amount of running he does, it's how clever he is with tactical positioning, covering other players and being able to read the game so well. At the age of 35, to be able to have the physicality he does is impressive.

"Of course, we are going to miss him now he is suspended. He's one of two players who have been ever-present in the Premier League this season. But we're going to use this period of his suspension, with an international break in the middle, to give him a proper break to make sure he is as strong as he can be for the final part of the campaign. I think we will get the rewards from that."

Muhamed Besic will deputise for Barry and Martinez said:

"We all know Mo had a good period when he was fully fit, he was at a good level. He's shown no signs of reaction and is ready. It is a good opportunity for him to step up into the team."

Roberto did not rule Bryan Oviedo out of Saturday's fixture however he isn't expected to start,

"Bryan has lost a considerable amount of weight but has been given the all clear. He has been training and I hope for him to rejoin the full group on Friday when we'll have a better idea [if he can play on Saturday]."

Leighton Baines is reportedly still suffering from his ankle injury and has been seeing a specialist:

"I think we've found the right solution for Leighton and it's great to see him free and performing the way he was on Saturday.

Finally, the Everton manager revealed how impressed he has been with Aaron Lennon's form:

"It's been great to see Aaron Lennon's form. He's been really impressive and influential in the final third."
