Tim Howard Completes Transfer To Colorado Rapids via Royal Blue Mersey
Signing finally made official
The long-drawn transfer of
Tim Howard and his fall from grace at Goodison Park are both finally at an end. MLS side
Colorado Rapids have today
confirmed that the USMNT goalie has signed on, and will be paraded at their game in the nation's capital against
D.C. United. Howard was on the bench for
Everton's debacle yesterday against
Arsenal, and flew over immediately after the game.
Rumors of the goalie's proposed move
first broke during the January
transfer window. While news of the transfer was
initially refuted, mainstream media
all but confirmed the transfer was going to go through sooner than later. Earlier on Saturday
Heath Pearce, former MLS footballer and current host of "The Mixer", a program on the YouTube channel
KICKTV, tweeted the news –
The timing of the transfer has been puzzling right from the beginning, but the
announcement from Colorado makes things clear. The club has stated that Howard will not join the roster until the summer transfer window which opens on July 4th. This seems to indicate that Howard will remain at Everton through the remainder of the season. Had Howard left this week it would have been a very poor negotiation by Roberto Martinez, leaving the club extremely susceptible to an injury to current starter Joel Robles.
Howard, who turned 37 earlier this month, has been at Goodison since 2006-07 when he came over from Manchester United on loan. He then signed a permanent deal with Everton in February 2007 for a £3 million transfer fee. The American has a streak of 210 consecutive Premier League starts between September 2007 and March 2013, just two games short of equaling the record set by club legend Neville Southall. Howard has made 412 appearances to date for Everton.
Here's what the player had to say about his tenure at Everton –
Both Martinez and club chairman Bill Kenwright commented on the player's impending departure too.
