Football transfer rumours: Diego Costa to make cut-price Atlético Madrid return? via The Guardian

Today’s rumours are back from the USSR

Never go back. So goes the time-honoured edict, which the Mill avoids testing by skulking beneath the desk in its downtime between bouts of frenzied gossip-guzzling activity. Should Diego Costa take our lead? China doesn’t appear to be on the cards anymore but Atlético Madrid might just be and if nothing else it would be a return to a club where people do seem to rather like him. What’s more, he might not – ahem – Costa very much. His former employers are reported to be offering just £22m, plus add-ons, to get him back and with the player very keen to get the thing done, there’s a chance Chelsea will just have to suck it up. Costa wants it all sorted out quickly but, in a sense, what’s the rush? Atlético’s transfer ban doesn’t finish until January – so along with his big move he’ll get six months off.

Wayne Rooney in Everton talks over return from Manchester United via The Guardian

• Boyhood Everton fan in discussions over his £250,000-a-week wages
• Rooney’s other option appears to be a move to Major League Soccer
Wayne Rooney is in advanced talks with Everton about rejoining his boyhood team with the potential move centring on the Merseyside club matching the £250,000-a-week basic salary he earns at Manchester United.

Rooney has a year left on his contract and is intent on having his wage matched. Everton are aware the 31-year-old has previously stated they are the only Premier League side he would leave United for and they believe this strengthens their position. Rooney’s only other option appears to be a move to Major League Soccer, where he could not earn as much, with interest from China fading.
