Everton will look to improve their horrid home form as they face a Southampton squad fighting for a spot in the Europa League

Everton, fresh off of a brutal draw at Crystal Palace, are finally back home and must now turn their attention to 7th place Southampton. Not only did Wednesday's match add more fuel to the dislike of manager Roberto Martinez, but the team may now be without several key players due to injury and suspension.

Southampton, unlike Everton, still have something left to play for in the league as they sit three points behind Manchester United and a place in the Europa League. The Saints also look like a much more solid squad than the one the Toffees routed back in August, back when the Arouna Kone on the wing experiment was still working. And while Everton may be missing a number of key players, Southampton look relatively healthy and ready to finish out the season strong.

When the injuries to the squad are coupled with the short rest, Martinez will not be able to put out his strongest line up for this week's test.

The Oppostion

Southampton picked up right where they left off last season and have been a solid team that has hovered just above mid-table for most of the year. They have a stout defense, led by Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk and an attacking group led by Graziano Pelle that can put goals on Everton's defense if they are not careful.

Saido Mane is the team's leader in assists at six and will be a creative force that Everton will need to keep in check if they have any hopes of leaving this match with a positive result. The Senegalese midfielder can be deployed all across the park and his mixture of speed, skill and passing ability could test the young center back duo of John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori.

On the injury front, it appears Shane Long will be fit for this weekend's clash and can add another dimension to Southampton's attack while former QPR striker Charlie Austin may remain sidelined with a knee injury.

Team News

Five starting players for Everton have picked up knocks and may be rested as a precaution this week. Ross Barkley, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Aaron Lennon are pretty safe bets to sit out as Martinez will want the players rested ahead of the Merseyside Derby and FA Cup Semi-final. Martinez revealed that he was concerned about the hamstring injury to Lennon due to the nagging nature of that kind of injury.

Tom Cleverley is also listed on Everton's injury report, leaving the cupboards looking bare at the attacking midfield position. With all the injuries to the squad, we will likely see a change to the preferred 4-2-3-1 that Martinez usually employs.

Finally James McCarthy will miss this week's match after picking up a red card shortly after the start of the second half at Selhurst Park. This surely means we will be seeing more of Mo Besic this week.

The Final Word

Everton have been unable to beat inferior teams at this stage of the season, perhaps they will fare better against teams that are their superior.

In all seriousness though, Everton have shown very little positives over the last few weeks and will likely struggle against a stout Southampton defense. Everton have also struggled mightily at home and will face an uphill battle considering all of the injuries to the squad.

Predicted Starting XI: Robles, Oviedo, Funes Mori, Stones, Coleman, Mirallas, Barry, Besic, Deulofeu, Kone, Lukaku

Everton vs Southampton: Roberto Martinez Pre-Match Quotes via Royal Blue Mersey

GettyImages-520921036.0.jpg

"Young players will get opportunities" says Martinez

On Thursday morning Roberto Martinez sat down with the assembled journalists for his pre-match presser to preview Southampton's visit to Goodison Park.

The focus this week was very much on team news as it was revealed after the Crystal Palace draw on Wednesday that several players were suffering from injuries in the build-up to Saturday's clash.

"Leighton Baines, Ross Barkley and Aaron Lennon will be assessed after picking up knocks on Wednesday."

The boss continued:

"Romelu has been carrying a bit of a problem and we'll assess him today to see if he can make the squad. It was against Palace – he stretched for the ball and felt his groin slightly. He didn't train yesterday, but we're hoping he can today[Friday]."

With the Blues without James McCarthy, because of his red card in the game at Selhurst Park, and Tom Cleverley with an injury from the same game, Martinez suggested he may look at the club's youth development squad to cover.

"Five games in two weeks means the squad is going to be tested at some point and that's going to be tomorrow against Southampton," said the gaffer.

"We're probably going to be in a position where young players will get opportunities, players who haven't been involved will have an opportunity, because we've collected all or a sudden four or five knocks and the suspension of James McCarthy."

Two of those doubtful for Saturday's fixture received PFA Young Player of the Year nominations, to which their manager reacted;

"We're pleased for them. They haven't played like young players and they deserve it."

At this stage the season Everton have collected the fewest points at home compared to any other Premier League season, something that was put to the Spaniard.

"It's a very interesting point because there have been contrasting results. I wouldn't say performances; I think at times we've had performances that have been good enough to get positive results but at home we haven't reached that.

"You're looking at two defeats from 16 away from home; that's probably a club record and it's as good as we've been. Since we beat Southampton, our standards and our performances away from home have been really strong and that's what we wanted. Clearly it's an away record that would get you top four in the League.

"At home is totally contrasting. Eight defeats is nowhere near good enough and that's where you normally build your league campaign, on the strength of the results at home, and that's a contrasting story that's very, very difficult to explain."

"At the moment, we know we need to be perfect and on top of that you are always holding your breath because maybe when you throw a two-goal lead with 12 minutes to go against West Ham, that could damage you.

"That is where the work is, believing immensely that we are a very good side, that we can rely on our fans and make Goodison a really tough place once more.

"I don't think you can consider tomorrow's game as a 'Goodison' performance. Tomorrow's game is the third in a five game block that we need to be at a very good level and clearly that is going to be very important for very different reasons than just playing at home.

"Being truly, truly honest this block of five games is a block and I don't think a defeat tomorrow would stop us from being a different team in the Merseyside derby and in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

"In the same way, a win tomorrow wouldn't guarantee us to be at the best level in the next two games."

The Toffees and the Saints face off at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Everton moved up to 12th after the draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday. A win (imagine that!) over Southampton could bump them up another spot by the end of the weekend.

The Saints come into Goodison Park in good form, having won three of their last four with the only loss coming at the hands of soon-to-be League Champions Leicester City. The Toffees, on the other hand, have taken just two points from their last four matches. On top of that, they have been really bad at home, with four wins, four draws and eight losses. So, this isn't sounding too promising for the hosts.

These two clubs last saw each other back in mid-August, the second game of the season. On that day, Everton dominated 3-0 while wearing their rarely-seen green and orange kits. Your goal-scorers that day were Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku with the big Belgian netting a brace. It would a surprise to see a repeat of that performance this time out.

Everton vs Southampton: Injury Report via Royal Blue Mersey

GettyImages-515121514.0.jpg

Blues could be missing up to 7 key players for Saints' visit.

Last time out Everton were at close to full strength for their trip to Crystal Palace but just three days later the Toffees are down to the bare bones for Saturday's clash with Southampton. In a season of few highlights, the reverse fixture at St. Mary's was right at the top when Martinez's men were at their most exciting – playing with pace on the break. Now however, the Blues are at their lowest ebb and face a difficult build up to what might be the most important week in manager Roberto Martinez's coaching career.

Leon Osman remains doubtful with what is being described as a knock but that is just the very tip of the iceberg considering who else is missing. Following his two yellow cards on Wednesday, James McCarthy is suspended and Muhamed Besic is expected to deputise. Two definitely out are Tom Cleverley with a 'knock' (and is doubtful for the Liverpool game on Wednesday) and captain Phil Jagielka with his hamstring injury.

Another player suffering from a hamstring injury is Aaron Lennon. The winger is doubtful and will be assessed right up until a couple of hours before the game, as will Leighton Baines and two players nominated for PFA Young Player of Year. Baines is suffering from a groin injury as is star performer Romelu Lukaku. Ross Barkley is doubtful for both tomorrow and the Merseyside Derby with a back injury.

For the visitors, manager Ronald Koeman confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Steven Davis has recovered from an ankle injury in time to face the Blues. Shane Long faces a late fitness test for the Saints with a head injury but both Charlie Austin and Florin Gardos are out with knee injuries; the latter far more serious.

Everton v Southampton Preview via GrandOldTeam

Watson-Soton-150x150.jpg

A Saturday game at 3 o’clock at Goodison. If the sun breaks through the clouds then there’s not many more places you’d rather be. Yet many of our parish are not looking forward to it very much.

I’m here to write tripe not judge, no one can tell you how to feel about Everton. It’s very much a personal affair between you and your royal blue deity.

But what a week ahead. The Germans have a word for it: twattenweik.

imagehttps3A2F2Fbeyondthelastman.files_.wordpress.com2F20132F122Fsouthampton-stars-1960.jpg

Alright I made that German word up and hopefully you’ve scrolled down past the photo, newsnow defo won’t publish this preview due to the swear filter breach.

The midweek affair against Crystal Palace was a drab goalless affair that the Manager tried to claim some moral high ground on as we competed for half the game with only ten men. Polite applause for the pleasing resilience but nothing to really celebrate as it’s another game without a win.

The mood around Everton and particularly Goodison games at the moment is like that point in Gotham City where Batman is either under the cosh against an apparent superior foe or where he’s gone missing. Not that I’m into comics but some of you weirdos are when as adults. Same as fully grown males into Wrestling really, it’s a bit weird and I bet it’s awkward to tell your new partners about it if you’re a male. Put it this way their ex is gonna piss themselves that they’re shacked up with a man boy who practices suplexes on the dog when no one’s looking and stays up late night to pay actual money on pay per view to watch grown men act out daft scripts, wearing trunks.

imagehttp3A2F2Fstatic.independent.co_.uk2Fs3fs-public2Fthumbnails2Fimage2F20132F052F302F152F48-ron-davies-gt.jpg

Thing is that in a week that contains both an away derby at the shitpit and a semi final at Wembley against Man Utd we need everything we can get, including some momentum and confidence which you’d imagine is not so high right now.

No question about the fans being right behind the team for both these important games but it would be good to give them something to build on. Like a win against Southampton for starters perhaps.

Southampton are a weird one in every sense of the word. A prime spot on the south coast that’s devoid of any redeeming features. It’s got a marina you cry, yes so have Swansea and Hartlepool and I’d rather live in either than surround myself with the mutants of Southampton.

imagehttp3A2F2Fi.dailymail.co_.uk2Fi2Fpix2F20142F082F262F1409076152134_wps_2_English_footballer_and_ma.jpg

A shame that one has to refer to them as mutants as there’s much to like about Southampton the club but if you’ve ever been unlucky to sit by the away fans any of these games, or heaven forbid spend more than three hours in Southampton for the away game, then you’ll be acutely aware of the needy and complete beaut behaviour of the locals there. It’s almost as if they are trying too hard to overcome the fact that being from Southampton is about as interesting as a rain drenched cardboard box found round the back of a Sunday market. The cardboard box probably smells better and has a more pleasing appearance.

For mathematics fans out there the equation is something like The Inbetweeners x Green Street x Soccer AM + Birkenhead 1991 – personality = Southampton.

You’re gonna get plenty of what I can only describe as TK Maxx terrace wear with just a hint of Burberry for those unfortunate enough to see it. Weedy twenty something lads with worse tattoos than a Wigan social club walking in full formation and absolutely shitting it if any scouser makes eye contact but instagram diarying it all and about how they took over the home pubs, and by that they mean the Arkles. If you’re in the right hand side of the Park End then prepare for scouse songs by four minutes and some fat biff who lives with his mum holding his arms out to the entire Everton support buoyed by four and a half pints of Carling.

imagehttp3A2F2Fwww.whoateallthepies.tv2Fwp-content2Fuploads2F20102F012FPA-6044551.jpg

They’re the perfect parody of all we like to take the piss out of and you can guarantee they’ll be first to pack the pubs out for any tournament that England qualify for, the sad self loathing hanks. And they were fuming when the Cruise Ships started jibbing them off in preference of visiting Liverpool. How do you market Southampton in a cruise brochure? Would take a marketing genius, but then look what the Spanish have done with Benidorm, so perhaps I shouldn’t be so critical?

Nah sack them. Here’s to half of France collapsing into the sea just for the tidal wave that will cleanse the piece of rock we share with them.

Onto their team, albeit briefly.

Ronald Koeman looks like an undercooked biscuit pulled disappointedly out of the oven by an 11 year old in Home Economics. There’s a few shouts for him to replace Martinez based on his team and their football for the past couple of seasons, I still haven’t forgave him for his snidery in the ECWC campaign of 1995/96. Free kicks on him though. We need more centre backs wellying free kicks in for goals these days.

imagehttp3A2F2Fstatic.guim_.co_.uk2Fsys-images2FSport2FPix2Fpictures2F20132F112F222F13851285789852FSport-014.jpg

As with the recent previews there’s a list of assorted opposition players as it’s hardly likely you’d learn anything from me if I tactically attempted to preview them:

Pelle – the first lad to sprout pubes in high school and was straight in them showers with no towel for the journey there, Latino MTV’s version of Max Headroom, the fantastic grock.

Sadio Mane – the exact player you was looking for on Pro Evo 3. Faster than a dog in the morning on Formby beach and will trouble any defence that shows it’s nerves, a la Everton.

imagehttps3A2F2Fmetrouk2.files_.wordpress.com2F20132F032F57334715_10.jpg

Steven Davis – how is this shitbastard even still getting a game in the Premier League?

Jordy Clasie – the lad who’s always got spare pills to sell at any European festival, ever. Your change is in jarg euro notes but you’ll pass them easily for a 20 euro bottle of water later.

Van Dijk – will have no have trouble understanding our local accent as he was trapped in space for ages with a scouser, a hologram and a neurotic robot with an angular face.

Forster – a face for rugby league but an ace keeper.

Onto Everton.

imagehttp3A2F2Fi2.liverpoolecho.co_.uk2Fincoming2Farticle9862959.ece2FALTERNATES2Fs1227b2FJS70094906.jpg

Lukaku is either not fit or being rested by this as it’s hard to tell what Martinez actually means in press conferences. Wonder who will take his place? I’m usually reluctant to go here but don’t be surprised to see him opt for a front two, which may contain one of Niasse and Kone. Or both. It would be worth it just for the Lower Gwladys to actually eat itself in indignation.

Barkley is also same as above so will miss out, so will Barry miss this so coupled with James McCarthy being suspended you’re about to witness a midfield that will have you having acute flashbacks to the nineties. Or cup games under Moyes. Lennon is also a doubt (who isn’t?) and so is Cleverley so expect to see two of Deulofeu, Mirallas, Pienaar and Oviedo.

Before you reach for Stubhub, the defence shouldn’t be too bad with Stones, Funes-Mori, Baines and an increasingly average Coleman lining up there. The sabre toothed Iberian who shouts a lot, makes saves and comes for crosses will play between the sticks.

imagehttp3A2F2Fi3.liverpoolecho.co_.uk2Fincoming2Farticle9040917.ece2FALTERNATES2Fs12002FWA5531758.jpg

So a week as an Evertonian you’re either going to remember for a long time, or forget for a long time. To stand any chance of anything good coming from it the players will need a raucous following behind them. Not wannabe Turkish ultra choreographed cringe like those shitheads across the park, but a snarling hostile and full on Everton support.

You’re good at that when the time’s right. And when the clock ticks 3 on a Saturday afternoon at Goodison, you know the time is right.

Right into these these blues.

Can Everton finally get it right at home against Southampton on Saturday?

Everton, fresh off of a brutal draw at Crystal Palace, are finally back home and must now turn their attention to 7th place Southampton. Not only did Wednesday's match add more fuel to the dislike of manager Roberto Martinez, but the team may now be without several key players due to injury and suspension.
