Everton draw 1-1 with Southampton, goals from Funes Mori and Mane via Royal Blue Mersey

Somehow, Everton took a point with a sub-par starting XI

It could have been a lot worse. Everton fielded a very weakened side and, despite constant pressure from Southampton, managed to nab a point with a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

That starting lineup certainly caused some rolled eyes. There was no Romelu Lukaku or Ross Barkley to stir up chances on the attack. And absent from the defense were James McCarthy, Gareth Barry and the injured captain Phil Jagielka. Instead, in their place were the likes of Arouna Kone, Leon Osman and Darron Gibson. This looked to be a tall task for the "B Team" to compete with the streaking Saints.

In the end, it proved to be just as difficult as assumed. The Toffees were outshot 18-7, with two of those Southampton shots hitting the woodwork. The Saints also earned 10 corners to Everton's three. And, while the possession was basically even, Southampton controlled the pace of the game after the opening 10 minutes or so.

Both goals were equally ugly. For Everton, Ramiro Funes Mori put the Blues ahead in the 68th minute. A corner kick came to him in the box. He headed it first and then the rebound returned to him. This time he struck it with his left foot. The ball deflect two or three times before getting past Fraser Forster.

Just a few minutes later, Sadio Mane got the equaliser. It was a bad bit of Everton defending that allowed it. The ball bounced around the box and off the feet of Funes Mori before Mane poked it into the back of the net. Yet again, the Toffees could not hold onto a lead. Same old story.

Now, it's difficult to be too critical of Everton on this day. Roberto Martinez is well-aware that his job is on the line and there are much more important games coming up. It was clear he didn't care too much about the result of this game and I would be inclined to agree with him on this occasion. I would be much more thrilled with wins in the Merseyside Derby on Wednesday and in the FA Cup semi-final next weekend against Manchester United than I would be about three points in a random league game with Southampton.

In that regard, I can appreciate what he was going for. He gave youngsters Callum Connolly and Tom Davies a chance to play with the first-team and they did well enough. Davies especially had a nice moment where he made a tackle in his own box and got the ball clear. He gave guys like Gibson and Leon Osman, who have struggled to even make the bench, a chance to feature.

But the real question is "Where is Oumar Niasse?" Sure, he was on the bench, but why did he not play? Maybe even start? The guy has barely played and yet, on a day where Martinez essentially threw in the towel as far as actually putting together the best possible XI, he needs to be on the field. Put him up top. Kone has had his chance this season. He doesn't need one more. Or put him on the wing. Deulofeu is an established member of Everton's rotation. What more could he show you? It boggles the mind.

Like I said above, the more important games are in the week ahead so a draw is actually a relatively satisfactory result given the players on the pitch. But come on, Bobby. If you are gonna put guys on the field to see what they can do, put all of them out there.

Seamus Coleman set to miss FA Cup semi-final via Royal Blue Mersey

Full-back limped out of Southampton draw with hamstring strain

Everton have been dealt another blow with the news that Seamus Coleman is set to miss next week's FA Cup semi-final against Man Utd with a hamstring injury.

The Ireland international pulled up early in the second half against Southampton on Saturday clutching his hamstring and had to be replaced by youngster Callum Connolly.

Speaking after the game, which ended 1-1, Roberto Martinez confirmed that Coleman will be assessed in the coming days, but is likely to miss both the Anfield derby and next week's trip to Wembley.

"He felt his hamstring and we will assess him in the morning but it will be hard to see him being involved this week as that sort of injury takes longer than a week."

With captain Phil Jagielka also doubtful for both games with a hamstring injury of his own, Everton are looking worryingly short at the back ahead of their most important week of the season.

Martinez acknowledges fans’ frustration at Everton via Royal Blue Mersey

Manager's comments after the 1-1 draw between Everton and Southampton

Everton took an unlikely lead in the second half of the game against Southampton, but once again their defensive frailties at Goodison Park rose to the fore and they conceded the equalizer soon afterwards.

A pitch invader who ran towards Leon Osman but was prevented from getting to Roberto Martinez by stewards clearly showed the fans frustration immediately after the tying goal. This is what Martinez had to say about it –

"We all understand that the results at home have not been anywhere near what we expect.

"We have been talking a lot about the contrasting seasons we are having away from home and at home and it is understandable you get that frustration.

"But we have a really good opportunity to take advantage of where we are. We are competing in the [FA Cup] semifinal and we have games where we want to make fans proud.

"That is what we are going to do from now until the end of the season, make sure they are proud of our performances and results."

The injury bug has come in to roost at Goodison Park, with yet another starter Seamus Coleman limping off after feeling his hamstring tighten.

"He felt his hamstring and we will assess him in the morning but it will be hard to see him being involved this week as that sort of injury takes longer than a week."

Local born youngsters Callum Connolly and Tom Davies both looked very comfortable in their cameo performances in an encouraging sign for Toffees.

"We were forced to make six changes as it was a very peculiar week to lose so many players after the Watford and Palace games. The suspension to James McCarthy stretched us to the maximum.

"We weren't anywhere near our technical best in our performance. We looked disjointed and rusty, but we found other ways to be competitive. We had a real good focus and a competitive nature about ourselves, and we ended up needing two young players to make their debuts – and they did that in an impressive manner.

"Today's point should be remembered for them. They coped with the opportunity and environment really well and it was a tough game for us in that respect.

"We were facing a side with continuity and we knew we were going to find it difficult with players dropping out of the squad. It's a point we had to fight a lot to get, but the two debutants were so impressive and a sign of all the good work being done at Finch Farm and the people representing the Academy."
