Dreams come true at William Hill’s ‘Play at Goodison’ Day via Everton Arent We

PlayatGoodison.jpg

To emerge from the tunnel with Z-Cars ringing in your ears. To step onto the hallowed turf. To run, pass, tackle, even score, at Goodison Park. Is that not the dream?

For a lucky band of Evertonians – plus a handful of non-believers – the dream came true, as William Hill staged a ‘Play at Goodison’ event on May 17.

Just days after the Toffees concluded their home campaign with victory against Watford, winners of William Hill’s social media competition gathered in the Brian Labone Suite to begin their matchday experience; two Everton Aren’t We representatives, including yours truly, came along for the ride.

And what a ride it was. After making our way down to the changing rooms to put on the kit provided by William Hill (blue for the ‘home’ side, yellow for the ‘away’), the players posed in front of the green screen for Premier League-style player graphics.

Game faces perfected, we made our way on to the pitch for the first time to warm up. Ronald Koeman claimed the Everton squad were “70 per cent” fit ahead of the season opener against Spurs; judging by the way the two sides meandered back to the changing rooms, seven per cent fitness would have been an optimistic estimate.

Luckily, two famous faces from Everton’s past were on hand to provide inspiration from the sidelines. Graeme Sharp, one of the club’s greatest ever goalscorers, took charge of the blue team, or “Dixie’s Diamonds”.

Managing the yellow side – dubbed “Team Bag For Life” – was Graham Stuart, present in the Blues’ last cup-winning line-up, and still the most recent player (along with Andrei Kanchelskis) to score in an Everton win away to Arsenal.

PlayatGoodison2.jpg

You can read Joe Jones’ interviews with both Stuart and Sharp right here.

The match itself will not challenge the 4-0 win over Manchester City or the 6-3 Bournemouth battering as the most quality-laden contest on the Goodison turf in 2017. There was plenty of drama on show though, as Stuart’s side edged an 11-goal thriller 6-5 despite dominating throughout.

A goal scored from an indirect free kick after a picked-up backpass and a hilarious shanked own goal were offset by some ruthless finishing, meaty challenges and a miraculous overhead kick that, had it gone in, would have forced Tom Davis to relinquish his Goal of the Season award.

The enormity of the pitch is something that can only really be appreciated when you are forced to sprint from the half way line back to your own goal to retrieve the ball. Those who took part won’t be accusing Everton players of being lazy any time soon.

There was a surprise minutes before the end of play as first-team regulars Joel Robles and Enner Valencia arrived to greet the players and pose for photographs; their appearance topped off a remarkable day at Goodison.

Rob Connor, who tasted victory with Graham Stuart’s side, said: “It was one of those ridiculous pinch yourself moments. My brother and I spent our youth either sat in the Gwladys Street or pretending to be playing on the turf, and then we actually had the chance to realise those dreams.”

James Hewitt notched the opening goal of the day; he said: “Walking out to Z-Cars made the hairs stand on end, and then to actually play a match on there, to run around where many legends have, was an unforgettable experience.

“To be honest, playing a game in the presence of Diamond and Sharpey was a real honour.”

Goodison-Park-1.jpg

Even non-Evertonians revelled in the aura of the occasion. Asa McKenzie, a Man City supporter, said: “It’s such an iconic ground, I was thrilled to be given the chance. I’ve recently come back from two years out with a broken kneecap, but I could’ve ran all day!”

There was a further treat in store for the competition winners after full time, as Everton legend Kevin Ratcliffe arrived to discuss the glory days as well as the modern game in a Q&A session.

Ratcliffe waxed lyrical about memories of Howard Kendall, *that* Goodison night against Bayern Munich and his favourite Everton memory, the 1984 FA Cup final.

‘Rats’ had the crowd in stitches with anecdotes about Ian Rush, and named Kenny Dalglish, Oleh Blokhin and Iain Dowie – yes, Iain Dowie – as some of the toughest opponents he faced. “If he didn’t know what he was going to do next, how the hell was I meant to know?” Ratcliffe said of the former Northern Ireland international.

The former Everton captain gave an honest assessment of the Everton squad, including fellow Welshman Ashley Williams – “really, we signed him four years too late” – and offered a withering assessment of the modern-day treatment of the FA Cup.

Ratcliffe claimed that Leighton Baines could have slotted into the Everton side of the Eighties (“though you’d be a brave man to drop Pat van den Hauwe”), and lauded the talent of his team mates of the time, most notably Neville Southall and Kevin Sheedy.

“The Q&A with Ratcliffe was an eye opener”, said James. “It’s only when he was talking, do you realise how much of a focal point of the club he was”.

Rob added: “The real thing I took from it was just how he spoke about Howard Kendall as a man and a manager, his stories about Nev in training making saves with his hands behind his back, just stuff I hadn’t heard before, and hearing that warmth when he spoke about that time and those players”.

Goodison-Park.png

Thanks to William Hill, a few more people can now claim to have played on the fabled Goodison Park pitch, in esteemed company with the likes of Dixie Dean, Neville Southall, Alan Ball, and Jo.

“I was really impressed with the event as a whole”, said Rob. “They went all out to create a player’s experience, all the staff were friendly, the green screen and filming were remarkably professional, and everyone really made it a great experience. We all left feeling really lucky to have been a part of it.”

Asa agreed: “William Hill organised the day brilliantly. I want to do it again!”

There may have been better players who tasted the Goodison Park experience this season, but none who felt more lucky and grateful to be there.

And in case you were wondering, yes, I did score in front of the Gwladys Street. Scoring in the warm-up counts, right?

Right?

Player Profile – M’Baye Niang via GrandOldTeam

niang-150x150.jpg

A player blessed with versatility, Niang can operate on either wing as easily as he can play centre forward.

The former French youth international stands at 6 foot tall. And at just 22, he has a lot of football ahead of him.

The chance to get his international career on track will be massive motivation for Niang.

Whether that be with his native France or Idrissa Gueye’s Senegal, who he is also eligible to represent, is to be seen.

He will bring blistering pace and directness to the side – exactly what the team is crying out for.

That’s been badly lacking since the injury to Yannick Bolasie back in December.

Niang spent the second half of the last campaign on loan at Watford.

To be honest it was a relatively unsuccessful stint in an extremely underwhelming Hornets side.

But forget about that.

Take the positives from the fact Niang will require no time to settle into the English game.

You may or may not know, but M’Baye will be familiar with the surroundings at USM Finch Farm, having served a period on trial under David Moyes in 2012.

A £2 million fee was agreed with Caen, his club at the time, but Niang elected instead to join Italian giants AC Milan.

Forget what you’ve read about Niang. The murmurs of laziness, a bad attitude or that he simply hasn’t looked like fulfilling his potential. He’s a young lad!

Ronald Koeman and Steve Walsh believe they can get the best out of him and that should be enough for Evertonians.

Koeman is not the type to tolerate players who l aren’t willing to put in 100%. All the time.

There’s no messing about when the stern Dutchman is on the case. And Niang knows he will take his eye off the ball at his own peril.

Up the Toffees.

“Ross’ future is going to lie elsewhere” via GrandOldTeam

koemanbarkley-150x150.jpg

Alan Stubbs reckons Barkley’s immediate future lies away from Everton.

Stubbs told talkSPORT. “I think Ronald put his cards on the table with Ross before the end of the season and he gave him an ultimatum.

“The fact that we are three weeks gone and Ross hasn’t signed, then I think that’s the biggest indicator that Ross’ future is going to lie elsewhere.

“The one thing that he (Koeman) said towards the end is that he wanted more creativity in the team and I think, with Klaassen, he’s certainly got that – his record is very good and he’s a great age.”

“Potentially it’s the most exciting pre-season that I’ve probably seen at Everton for a good five or 10 years,” Stubbs added.

“We have an owner (Iranian billionaire Farhad Moshiri) who is ready to back the club and I think he is trying to get his business done early and the first two signings look really good and I think there will be plenty more.

“I think Everton will potentially be spending over £100m and I didn’t think I’d ever be saying that.

“We are now waiting to see if Romelu stays or goes. The sooner that cloud is removed, whether he is staying or going, it is better for the club so they can move forward.

“Irrespective of Romelu’s transfer Everton have shown they are going to be as serious as they possibly can to get into the top four – that is the aim for Everton at the moment.”

Interviews with Graeme Sharp & Graham Stuart via Everton Arent We

Goodison.jpg

Thanks to William Hill, myself and Ed (@ViewFromGwladys) got the chance to go down to Goodison Park and play in an 11 a side match on the hallowed turf.

You can read Ed’s piece on Playing at Goodison Park here.

While we were there we got a chance to briefly interview our managers, Graeme Sharp and Graham Stuart and ask them about the promising first season under Ronald Koeman. These interviews took place before the last game of the season against Arsenal.

Graeme-Sharp.jpg

The Sharp Interview

What do you think about the first season overall, with Koeman coming in and doing so well?

I think he’s done well. It’s been an improvement on the last two seasons. It’s always going to be difficult for a new manager coming in; he’s got to assess what he has at his disposal, and I think he deserves a lot of credit for finishing in a European spot. The next couple of transfer windows will be really important. I think everyone can see positive signs, and I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far.

When he came from Southampton, Koeman didn’t have a reputation for bringing youngsters through, but here he has brought young players into the first team. Do you think that is in part down to David Unsworth and how well he has done with our under 23s?

I think he got a hard press for not bringing kids through at Southampton. What you’ve got to remember is that he’s a manager and he decides if the kids are ready or not. Obviously at Southampton they weren’t ready. We’ve got a really good reputation for bringing kids through, Unsy’s doing a fantastic job and I’m sure he would’ve been championing Tom Davies and the other young boys coming through. I don’t think it was a case of not giving youth a chance, I just think maybe the youth at his disposal at Southampton weren’t good enough. He knows the quality of players and it’s great to see the young lads flourishing here.

Who do you think has been the signing of the season?

It’s a really difficult one because we’ve made some really good signings. I think Morgan Schneiderlin has been a fantastic signing, Idrissa Gueye – outstanding. Ashley Williams has come in and been a little bit up and down but he has done well, and Bolasie got the unfortunate injury. Out of them all, I’d have to say Idrissa. Having watched him at Aston Villa on only a couple of occasions I wasn’t sure what we were gonna get but since he’s came here, he’s been outstanding.

Another season has gone by and we are still without a derby win for a number of years now. What do you think that’s down to?

It’s disappointing. We all know that. There’s been a lot of things put about that we can’t do this and we can’t do that and performances have been disappointing in the last few derby games. Some people have questioned the attitude of the players but I wouldn’t go as far as to say that. I just think they haven’t turned up on the day. It’s certainly been disappointing that in the bigger games we haven’t really shown what we can do.

Your opposite number today (Graham Stuart) scored the last time we won away at Arsenal. Isn’t it about time that run ended?

Course it is. Our record at the top clubs hasn’t been great but the results at Man City and United this season shows we can go out and get a result. Arsenal have had an up and down season as well with a lot of pressure on the manager but its never an easy place to go to. It’s a great place to go and play. They’ve had some really good teams over the years so it would be great to finish the season a high but it will be a tough game. We’ve got to look forward to next season now and hopefully we will show ambition in the transfer market and have a nice couple of marquee signings to help us push on from 7th place.

With us having had the Dixies last season, we want to know your: Player of the Season, Goal of the Season, Match of the Season.

I’m a striker and I think what Romelu has achieved, being the top scorer for so long, he’s been fabulous for us, so he’s my player of the season with Idrissa as the runner up. For goal of the season you can’t look past Tom Davies’ goal against Man City, and I think with the two penalty saves at Man City and getting a good point that has to be match of the season.

Graham-Stuart.jpg

The Stuart Interview

How do you think the season has gone?

I think it’s been a terrific season. Our home form has been excellent; the majority of our good results have been here at Goodison Park and that sets up a feel-good factor for the home supporters, and it’s always nice to get points on the board and score plenty of goals here at Goodison Park and send the fans home happy.

Koeman came in with a reputation of being more of a disciplinarian than his predecessor, and maybe more of a winning mentality. Has that come across off the pitch?

I liked Ronald from the moment I met him. He’s got an aura about him, he walks in the dressing room – instant respect, simple as that. He knows what he wants, he’s confident in himself with what he wants to do and that is slowly but surely coming across in the players. They’ve bought in to what he wants to do, Jan Kluitenberg has worked really hard and its evident that we are an awful lot fitter as a side than we were a year ago, so slowly but surely everything is coming together. Rome wasn’t built in a day and we’ve still got to be patient. I think by preseason the team will be fully up to speed with what is required.

Have you got a player of the season, goal of the season and performance of the season?

It’s very hard to look past the Dixies themselves. If you’re a centre forward who’s scored 25 goals and has a chance of winning the golden boot you’re going to feel very aggrieved if you’re not winning the player of the year trophy so that is that one, but special mention to Idrissa Gueye who has been magnificent. When Morgan came in you could see he was a quality buy for us and I’m sure he will be a massive influence next season. He didn’t play too much in the season as a whole but he influenced the team in a big big way. Goal of the season again you can’t look past Tom based on the fact that it was an individual goal and it was against Man City, everybody enjoyed that one. Maarten Stekelenburg’s performance away at Man City was as good as I’ve seen from a goalkeeper. They beat our back four but Maarten was inspired on the day and capped it with two penalty saves so marten deserves a mention for that.

You were on the scoresheet the last time we won away at Arsenal – that’s an unwanted record. Do you think it’s time we put an end to that run?

There’s a few unwanted records we’ve got and a few things we would like to put right. The last time we won a trophy I was playing, the last time we beat Arsenal away I was playing and that’s too long, we all know that. There’s only one group of players that can put that right and that’s the players of today and they want to do it. None of our sides go out to get beat but Arsenal is a difficult place to go, even more so on Sunday because they’ve still got half a chance of making top four so they will be well up for it. We can’t do any better than 7th so you would think that they can’t possibly want it less than us, but the manager wants us to go out in a positive way, nothing would have changed in training and no one would have taken their foot off the peddle, that’s for sure. So hopefully it will be a good end to the season for us.

Another huge thanks to William Hill for inviting us down.
