Transfer Rumour Everton poised to make £25m bid for Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney

This is nonsensical - we've got more central midfielders than you can shake a stick at and until we move a couple on that's the last position we should be buying.

Baines is 33 and increasingly injury prone - as we saw last season, we're 1 injury away from Cuco Martina playing left back. Far from being a low priority, I'd argue that getting a quality left-back in is the biggest priority.
Why is it nonsensical ?

The number of players we have to cover a position is totally irrelevant.... if they are no good enough then we have none.
We have a problem at centre back and we need a player there, it doesn't matter how many in that position are at the club waiting to be shipped out.

Players will be signed to fill the holes in the team not to replace players who played in the same position.

Whereas Leighton Baines is not the player he was I don't think left back is our biggest problem.
Signing a long term replacement obviously makes sense, but are we writing off Robinson then as a no hoper ?[/QUOTE]

We need to get a top LB now! send Robinson on a loan to a championship side like Dowell did, have Baines as back up this season, then next season when Baines has all but finished his career or moves to MLS etc bring Robinson in as backup to Tierney (or whoever we get)

In footballing terms, this statement is literally the definition of nonsensical.

We have, at a rough count, 7 registered central midfielders in our team. That's 7 players for 2 positions, maybe 3 on the odd occasion.

On the other hand, we have 1 left back, who is injury prone.

You'd have to be half mad not to see that signing a left-back is a much higher priority than another central midfielder.

Marco Silva will be judged on the team he puts out on the field , their performance and the results they get.

He will not be sacked if we have fifteen centre halves or ten central midfielders as long as we win every game, but, he will be sacked if we don't win games. He will be focused on the team that will be played next season not on the players that played last season if he doesn't want to keep them. Players will be moved on but some may take longer than others and it would be folly to sacrifice the 2018/2019 team just to clear out deadwood and I don't believe that is happening.
Leighton Baines is certainly past his best but can do a job at left back and I believe that the manager is assessing all of his squad before dipping into the market and in particular I think he may be looking at Robinson to see if he is ready to contribute.
I may be wrong but when Baines played last season I didn't think that left back was a glaring weak spot in the team.
I have never considered Baines as injury prone but certainly we have to have two players to cover that position.

I do believe we have made contact over the availability of several players but I think the manager may be looking closely at his current crop this week and over the next couple of weeks before making final decisions on some..

This is ultimately what it comes down to - he missed a fair chunk of the season through injury and we had Cuco Martina at left-back, at 33 it's safe to assume he will struggle to stay fit all season again, so to go into next season with only 1 senior left-back would be utter lunacy.

I think we need both, but we need a legit box to box CM and a CB that can actually mark someone in space and make a decent pass MUCH MORE than we need a LB. Numbers be dammed.

I don't think Baines can do much of a job, but he and Robinson have a better chance at being competent than Davies/Klaassen will in Silva's system and/or the pathetic combination of CBs we have can. But we need all three, really.
