Transfer Rumour Everton poised to make £25m bid for Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney

It seems credible to think we made serious enquiries, but if we have a limit on what we think he is worth then reasonable to draw the line and move onto other targets.

The problem is that everything gets conducted in a quasi-public form and there are multiple parties, some of who will leak selectively and put their own spin on events, and others who will spread disinformation.

I think Celtic have encouraged our interest in an attempt to test the waters without any serious intention at this stage to sell him, unless they can justify it to their fanbase on receiving a big bid. Our problem is that we are ripe for being used as a stalking horse in this manner.

It feels like this is that new paddy power advert when they call out BS:

No they are not

Joyce said we're in for him and he's our top target.

We don't have the money.
Maybe we have learned from last year where we just threw money around without actually filling the gaps that needed filling.

Tierney may well become a top player, but at the moment he is playing against teams most weeks that are not championship standard.
25m is a lot of money to pay for an untested left back. I think we may be trying to structure a deal where the fee will rise as the player reaches certain targets whereas Celtic want the money up front.

I would have thought that a dominant central midfielder in the mould of N'Zonzi would have been our top priority or a quality centre half.
Whereas Leighton Baines is not the player he was I don't think left back is our biggest problem.
Signing a long term replacement obviously makes sense, but are we writing off Robinson then as a no hoper ?

I think there's a lot in that Bri.

Without doubt I'm of the view Celtic are pushing this. We've caught on a bit and have persuaded the player. Part of the issue will be the fee involved, not only would we want it lowered a bit to reflect what we consider his value but also to send a clear message out after last summer.

I also think we need to shift some out before any transfer can be sanctioned. Celtic will be happy enough with that as it gives them time to play some CL games.

If it gets done, I imagine it will get done late and perhaps when we have made a decision on Baines/Robinson.

This is nonsensical - we've got more central midfielders than you can shake a stick at and until we move a couple on that's the last position we should be buying.

Baines is 33 and increasingly injury prone - as we saw last season, we're 1 injury away from Cuco Martina playing left back. Far from being a low priority, I'd argue that getting a quality left-back in is the biggest priority.
