Everton references in popular culture

Remember seein a play in the 80's, either a C4 or bbc2 youth prod type thing.

The 2 lads want to go to the game and hitch a lift down the lancs then M6, they make it, the game was Fortuna Sittard away, and it showed the goals and streaker that nearly fed to police alsation some meatballs, nearly left them on the fence as well.

cant for the life of me find out what it was called ? around time of blackstuff, one summer etc.

Losing to panathanikos in european cup QF (away goals rule actually having dominated atGP and been cheated in Athens) on the wednesday then RS on the Saturday in FA cup semi having led at half time. April 1971. We were never the same again, sold Ball Catterick heart problems, Labone retired all in next couple of seasons while RS were on rise, high profile players like Keegan, media hype beginning in full swing and European campaigns giving massive publicity to them, we had flurries of hope with mid 70s team and the 1977-79 team was really good at times but lacked a killer instinct.

Actually, now you put it that way...

I remember an episode of the bbc drama 'Colditz' in the 70's where anthony valantine playing a german officer claimed to like English football and knew of Englands best team 'the Everton'.

Beat me to it! Was just going to post that one. david McCallum was trying to be a mate to the POW. Asked him who had won the league "the Wolverhampton or the everton" POW leader replied "the Everton"
I got actors wrong. You are right. David mc Callum the POW I think now.

Feller in an Everton kit (circa 78 edition) in Aussie Rules footy film The Club

Loads of unflattering references to Everton in [Poor language removed] Jimmy McGovern's third rate crying arse stuff (Cracker - where a feller dying says he's a blue and the other actor says 'double tragedy then' or some such ****; and one in his scab-friendly drama 'Dockers' when Everton was also rubbished as a second rate club ).

Brookie characters Tinhead O'Leary and Sinbad were blues.

Alexie Sayle novel 'Barcelona Plates' Everton are mentioned as the biggest club in the city historically.

Andrew Brown book 'Fishing in Utopia' Everton mentioned as the favourite team of an old codger in a nursing home.

BBC play about the Tony Kay match fixing scandal The Fix - all about his time at Sheff Wed/Everton.

The Liver Birds - when Bill declared his hatred for Everton and his love for all things red.

Rising Damp Rigsby character played by blue Leonard Rossiter talking about Tommy Lawton in one episode.

Haven't checked it out but there's a Liverpool set crime fiction character (I think he's called Harry Devlin in Martin Edwards crime novels) who's a blue.

Everton mentioned by one character as his team in Harry's Game - IRA drama in the early 80s.

And, of course, the Ballad of Dixie and Kenny...FFS...FFS.

...loads more, no doubt. It's ironic, though, that at a time when we have Mr Showbiz as numero uno at the club our cultural profile is about as high as Rotherham's.

From what I can gather, Shankly had given more emphasis to succeeding in Europe than Catterick ever did. Liverpool had some big games in Europe in the 60s and nearly made the breakthrough on the continent a lot earlier than they eventually did in the early to mid 70s.

There's an Italian crime film from 1968 called 'Seven Times Seven' which is set in London during the 66 Cup Final and features footage from the game including Trebilcock's equaliser.

Related to the late Bill Dean (of Golden Vision fame). Can tell you he was only playing himself rather than acting.

He never missed an opportunity to big up the Blues. Took a job doing an advert where he was the manager of a football team going to the Cup Final - as was the tradition he takes them into the tailors to be measured for new suits - something along the lines of "I want them to look their best when they play...on Saturday."

The producers wanted him to say "play Liverpool" - he naturally was having none of this and suggested "Everton". They settled on "playing The Arsenal".

A minor reference in an Official Pink Floyd book - the band watched us play a home game back in about 1974.

The Z Cars connection and the actors visiting Goodison.

That was probably due to the 1 club per city rule. I reckon we suffered more than we realise with that one.

I think it was when Ricky Tomlinson was playing Jim Royle that he was asked if he was religeous. His reply was 'Only when
Everton's playing away.'

In Keeping Up Appearances, Onslow was expressing his disappointment about Daisy's dishonesty. 'I mightn't have married you
if you'd told me the truth', he said.
Daisy had a very guilty look on her face when he said 'You never told me you were a Liverpol supporter'

I have a Billy Bunter book in which reference is made to 'Dixie Dean, the Evertonian wonder'.

Stone Roses gigs last year, interviewing a bird after the gig, some lad behind comes up singing "Everton, everton everton"....!

I went that gig, and I heard on 3 seperate occasion in different area's everton songs getting sung.....at Heaton Park.
