Everton references in popular culture

That was probably due to the 1 club per city rule. I reckon we suffered more than we realise with that one.

D'you know, just looking at the records on that and it changed my mind a bit. I always thought we just competed in Europe when we won the title at the begining and end of that decade with not much in between. But we actually (when it was based on invitation rather than league finishing position) competed in Europe in the 60s regularly in the Fairs Cup. It's probably more correct to say that we were the team earlier focused on Europe and Liverpool took up that challenge after 68 when it became based on league finishing position (the Fairs Cup).

John Cock, who played centre forward for Everton from 1923-1925 (29 goals) appeared in a couple of feature films in 1920 and 1930. The 1920 silent feature 'The Winning Goal', and the 1930 film 'The Great Game' (same title as the early 1950s British film about football with James Hayter).
Cock had a long football career, playing for many clubs besides Everton, including Chelsea.

There´s an episode of Cracker where Robert Carlyle has a discussion about supporting Everton and describing it as being only slightly better than chemotherapy.

There´s also an episode of The League of Gentlemen where a guy who is part of any angry crowd of villagers is wearing an Everton top.

Alexie Sayle novel 'Barcelona Plates' Everton are mentioned as the biggest club in the city historically.

Barcelona Plates is a collection of Short Stories. The short story you're thinking of is The Last Woman Killed in the War which I mentioned in my first post.

Sorry, yeah that's right it was. There's also a reference to Everton in Alexie Sayle's biography Stalin Ate My Homework.
