Everton Summer Transfer Thread - 2022

Has he? Cos he spent about £60m last summer without any big sales and has already spent about £50m this summer again without any big sales. I look at spurs and arsenal doing the same thing and it seems ok for them, it’s just us who get punished for throwing money around when others do the same.

Probably because they bring in far more money than we do. It’s not as simple as purchases vs sales.

Their income far exceeds our own in terms of ticket sales, hospitality, commercial deals and shirt sales: the more money you bring in, the more you can spend.

Anybody who thinks you can get half a team from their youth system is delusional. However, one first team player every two or three years doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Teams like Southampton, who like it or not are now our direct competitors, seem to manage it. We are now at least five years away from buying our way up the table again, given our finances, so we need to be more creative and take more risks

If you averaged out the time between

Jeffers Osman Hibbert Rooney Vaughan Anichebe Rodwell Barkley Davies Gordon

It’s probably one first team player every 2 or 3 years all the way back to about the late 90s.

That’s only including pure academy players there as well so not Gosling Stones Holgate DCL Branthwaite who we bought as youngsters and then they broke in.

That’s also not including the multitude of young players who did play first team but weren’t good enough to stay there and now are elsewhere like Lundstram Forshaw Dowell Kenny

It also doesn’t include academy players we let go only to then buy back later like Baines Jagielka

It also doesn’t include the current crop of Dobbin Simms Onyango etc. who I think will get games this season

Our recruitment has been bad in recent years no doubt about it but we go too over the top with criticism of it at times

The player trading profits on Lukaku Stones Barkley Gueye Digne Richarlison were big, if we sold DCL Gray Gordon right now they’d be the same. If you look at how many bottom half clubs have sold multiple players for over 50 mill pounds in the last few seasons there won’t be many.

If anything I think we’ve played some young players far too much when they’ve not been good enough. Davies Kenny and Holgate have arguably had a lot more football than they deserved given their form with us. DCL did for a while as well but has started to repay that fair in recent seasons. Gordon got a whole season in the first team. I struggle to think of any moment when a good kid at Everton is held back and frustrated, we normally massively over play them way too early.

Shame that we're not only decades below the Sky 6, but also seeing the likes of West Ham sprint off into the sunset - two years of European football on the spin and spending huge money on further improving their squad. Then there's Newcastle where success is guaranteed within a matter of time.

Us, on the other hand, are forced into selling our best player and look like replacing him with a relegated player who doesn't look like he'd be fit to lace Richi's boots.

But not only that, you've got clubs like Palace and Brighton that have improved massively in the past year, and we're also markedly inferior to Leicester too.

Can probably write off a top 8 finish for the foreseeable future, which basically makes watching us a complete and utter waste of time.

Can see us fighting with Wolves and Brentford for an 11th place finish this season. Exciting.

I mean the season before last we got 59 points, which was more points than West Ham got last season.

Crystal Palace have finished above us once in what feels like about 30 years.

I agree spurs and arsenal do, but I’m not sure West Ham bring in far more money than we do, I may be wrong though? But to the extent of spending over £100m in one transfer window without recouping something in sales?

Interesting concept you have of being a fan.

Not fussed over the Belgium CM as for me we need an instant impact player in that defensive midfield role but hope we can try get Broja as an understudy long term for DCL.

I have no idea about West Hams accounts and stuff. But they sold sommet like 20% of the club last year, and have a Declan Rice to sell if needs be.

Davies and Gordon is a pitiful return in the space of, what, 5, 6, 7 years?

We have two problems as I see it, we don't use our underage teams as development teams, they seem to operate independently of our first team, and we don't offer a route to first team football for young players, we don't trust them, we don't give them opportunities, even in cup games. If I was Thierry Small, I would have left too. He had no chance here. We'd have never played him.
Is it worse than other clubs?

Which helps definitely.

I think we have acknowledge we are being restricted for heavy spending in previous years. FFP is a massive lagging indicator, so it feels counter intuitive.

Alot to break down from that.

Leicester are an interesting concept!
They have a larger wage bill than us! Some of there best players in Vardy, Schmeichel & Evans are getting to the end of there careers, there best player Tielimans looks like he wants out and a few of there 'prospects' seem to have hit a ceiling.
They havent brought a single player in this summer.......yet!
There big signings like Daka & Soumare last season didnt really work out as of yet.
Are they hamstrung by P & L rules due to there wage bill?
As they have been the biggest threat to the scab six over the last 5 years, if that is the case than the PL P & L rulings would of done there job again to protect the clubs they set out to help

Who have Southampton brought through? And how much game time has Small got, having been given a chance to play here?

We have brought through Gordon, Davies, Kenny, Barkley and lads like Holgate, DCL, Stones in that time to. Prior to that Vaughan, Rooney, Anichebe, Rodwell, Osman etc. Most have played international football. I'm not sure Southampton are miles ahead of us at all.

11th is a dream for this season. No way we get anywhere near it imo.
