Because we are trying to stretch whatever money we have to spend over a few purchases for sums far in excess of what we actually can spend. We are using loans with oligations/options tp buy to do this.
We are trying to bring in 80m worth of players for a spend of 30m ... for instance.

If we paid the money that is demanded then we will get 30m of players.

I guess we will see as the window progresses. Still a long way to go, just a shame that I don’t think we will get any deals done before the season starts because we are going to be waiting for clubs to be desperate to sell and agree to our terms.

was done to balance books not fund transfers.
I think this is abundanlty clear now.

Realistically we're needing to see a the sale of Gomes plus Allan to raise about £30M to hand to Lampard and we can also utilise the wages freed up with previous departures to fund a couple of loans.

I expect 3 in, one probably a £30M purchase for somene like Gibbs-White and two loans for decent to dire players.

If we really are struggling to buy players, I would seriously consider converting Godfrey to a DM if we are struggling to play him as a CD...

He can tackle, he can pass the ball forward 5 metres, and he is quick and no need to head a ball too often...get into a ball playing midfielder and that person can do the Defence splitting passes...hopefully Frank can teach him to read the game and we could save ourselves a shedload of money.

Was listening to the Esk's podcast thoroughly depressed now we are in an even bigger hole than I thought, he thinks we need to sell again to secure any deals.
If he's right it would explain why we *appear* to be looking for frees and loans, and the only purchases we're reported to be pursuing all seem to involve token upfront payments along with instalments kicking in around summer '23.

That approach would increase the possibility of Michael Keane getting game time, so it's a no from me.

Unless the taps are turned on this week I think they've accepted another relegation campaign.

Decisions are being made here with small margins for error: no spending and hope that the manager can put a team spirit together in the way that a Brentford or Palace have. That's the plan until a sale.

We need to get our heads around this unfortunately.
