I'd take 30-35m and Gallacher with Broja on loan (no fee) with a 'low' option to buy in a heartbeat. Get in Zinchenko and KLP with that money and some from Kean if he's sold. Bring in the boy Gilmour if funds allowed too.

Would improve us hugely.

If they want the starting forward for Brazil badly enough then make Gallacher the makeweight for that deal.

Yeah I know part ex deals don't happen, but effectively sell Richy for 40-45 tied with Gallacher coming the other way for 10-15.

Whatever way you look at the squad, you end up needing a load of incomings and outgoings. We’ve been so poor, that there’s literally no downside to a complete overhaul. We need to be more ruthless with contracts and change.

We have so many players who don’t fit any coherent style. The midfield is a complete mess with Gomes, Davies, Delph and VDB all either going or should go this summer.

Delph has shown a lot of quality and has been one of our best players recently, but he’s rarely available and his wages are too high to make it worth him being kept on. Gomes and Davies have lower stock than ever right now, but neither offer enough and should be out on loan if no decent offers come up.

We need to build with Lampard’s attacking style and the right players, and I’m hoping Dele can be central to that if we can get the right players around him.

The biggest question mark is whether DCL or Richarlison stay. Assuming it’s Richarlison who goes, I think we end up with:

Players to go:
Frees / loans ending
Rondon - a year left on his deal, but give him away! £50k a week
Tosun £75k a week
Delph £100k a week
Sigurdsson £120k a week
Kenny £20k a week
Donny £100k a week
El Ghazi £30k a week

Loans out
Gomes (out on loan) - high wages, low stock, not good enough - £120k a week, half covered by the loan
Davies (out on loan) - low stock, bad time to sell - £50k a week
Branthwaite (out on loan) - needs game time, loan him out to a promoted team or Norwich as part of a deal for Aarons - £30k a week, not covered by the loan

Sales
Mina (great player but we’ve relied on injury prone players for too long) - £10m - £120k a week
Richarlison - big fee, £70m? £120k a week
Kean - £30m to Juve, apparently being completed a year early in trade for losing the second year’s loan fee - £60k a week

That’s over £100m in sales brought in, and £900k pw in wages saved. I’ve left Townsend out as I think he’ll be kept around after he’s recovered from his injury.

Who do we sign? No idea personally as I’m sure being threatened with relegation until this week has taken us out of any chance of the likes of Kamara.

This would give us a lot of budget to play with and build from scratch though, and we have to make use of the loan market to plug gaps cheaply.

Since posting this, we’ve seen these players leave:
Delph
Tosun
Sigurdsson
Kenny
Donny
El Ghazi

And I still think we’ll see Rondon, Gomes and Mina leave permanently. Davies and Branthwaite both need games and loans.

Richarlison is also about to go. The Chelsea interest is real and he has enough interest to get the £60-70m offer it’ll take for us to sell. Great player and we’ll miss him, but it’s needs must with his contract/our financial situation.

With that the two nailed on signings for me are Tarkowski and Zinchenko. Tarkowski signing brings a very good defender who isn’t injury prone, hopefully he does for us what Mina does when fit.

Zinchenko is a really smart signing for a few reasons. I think he’s a unknown quality to most, and will show why he’s been in and around the City squad for so long. He’ll bring relentless energy, some technical ability, and also (maybe essentially, he’s a great option for LB if Myko has a knock). This saves us having to buy another LB which is key this summer. Only 25 too.

I’m hoping that Zinchenko and Tarkowski will cost max £30m between them in total fees, and £100k each max in wages.

I’ve added them to the lineup as I think both are nailed on.

This leaves us needing a deep sitting 6, a winger and a striker to challenge DCL.

For the 6..

I’d be looking in France. There’s a constant stream of good midfielders that come from that league for reasonable fees. Best case for me, but almost completely unrealistic would be Danilo Pereira. He’d be perfect for the role and, although he’s a bit older, would be brilliant in our midfield.

More realistic options I’d like to see would be Doucoure from Lens and Lucien Agoume from Inter (he was on loan at Brest). Both are young but possible stars in the future and the type of signing we should make.

For the wing..

I’d be really surprised if we don’t throw the kitchen sink at bringing in Pulisic. If Chelsea sign Richarlison and Sterling it pushes him further down the pecking order, but in his first season (when Lampard was Chelsea manager) he had 11 goals and 9 assists in 33 games.

He’d cost a lot, but his stock isn’t as high as when Chelsea paid the £55m to buy him. I think £40m may be enough at a wild guess, if he’d even remotely be interested. Lampard is key if there’s any chance, and I think Pulisic’s potential is overlooked with all of Chelsea’s other star quality. Again it’s unlikely and we’ll probably have to look elsewhere for cheaper.

Two other options I’d look at are Martin Terrier and Diaby from Leverkusen. Both maybe ambitious targets with the seasons they’ve had but there’s no way we’re selling Richarlison without a significant signing coming in.

To challenge DCL..

I doubt we’d spend big money on a back up but I really think we need to plan for life after DCL and hope he has a great season, attracting big offers. Unfortunately we aren’t Man City and sales like Richarlison / DCL are a must for us for us to improve as a whole.

Broja seems like a logical purchase/loan with potential and some experience in the league already. Rutter is a cheaper and arguably better alternative who’s done well for Hoffenheim and would probably jump at the opportunity.

In summary I think the players who have already left balance the books and don’t add anything to the budget. With these players leaving next though..

Richarlison £65m / £120k pw
Mina £10m / £120k pw
Gomes £5m / £120k pw
Rondon free / £50k pw
Kean £27m / £70k pw
(£97m / £480k pw)

This opens the door for..
Tarkowski £5m (signing fee) / £100k pw
Zinchenko £25m / £100k pw
Cheick Doucoure £20m / £50k pw
Rutter £15m / £60k pw
Diaby/Terrier £35m / £100k pw
(£100m / £410k pw)

And we end up with..

I cant see us playing 4231.

But bonus points for not mentioning anybody from Chelsea in some weird swap deal.

If we’re swapping players from Chelsea, I think we go all in on Gallagher. Seems that Tuchel wants to give him a real shot so I don’t think it happens, but we need some all around midfielders in the worst way. His form tailed off in the second half of the season, but it was his first one in the Prem, it happens to loads of players. Richy being one prime example. He never stops running, is a nuisance on defense, and comfortable in attack.

Broja would be nice but I’d much prefer him on loan, he’s a beast but didn’t score enough to justify a big fee yet. Ziyech has a wand for a foot but can’t handle the league, physicality wise and with injuries. Pulisic is an excellent player but way too injury prone to justify his salary. Colwill looks the part, but obviously really unproven. A little surprised we haven’t been officially linked to Hudson-Odoi. Good player and comfortable at RW, but that injury was rough.
