Everton Summer transfers 2021

He was brilliant defensively in an unnatural position of left back. He has great physicality and pace there are things he can work on such as not shutting off and following runners at times but his composure and quality are potentially immense. You wouldn't expect him to be the finished article at his age. Also his fee he was only 25m which was a relative decent fee in this market. When leaves us it will for at least treble his fee.. He will only improve too. Our issues are finding more Been Gofreys.

Totally agree, he's got everything you want in a CB.

One positive with Benitez is that hes known to improve defenders and have them playing in a solid and clear tactical setup.

The one thing he needs is a consistent stable centre back partner....Keane isnt good enough and Mina suffers from too many injuries.

50m is over priced for White for me I think we are just being mentioned to push the fee to Arsenal up. If we aren't selling Mina its not a priority if we are I am not sure White is the dominant leader type we need alongside Godfrey. Right back, right wing and midfield are higher priorities than CB.

Its a big fee. £20mil down could almost be covered by James to Milan and Keans loan fee...then most of the balance from a Mina/Keane sale.

He seems to be a player who can 'sweep' behind allowing Godfrey to come out quickly and win the ball -- which we know hes good at.

Also looks like being a ball carrier + good passing which we lack in defence.

He would also allow us to play a higher line which im itching to see.

White would be a good signing imo , if the report is genuine or not is up for questioning.

Brighton do have some promising players, I like Bissouma and Lamptey in particular.

Lamptey looks dynamic as a wing back. The only concern really is that his hamstring injury may affect his acceleration which is his major asset.

A back 5 like this could be very exciting;

Pickford
Aarons White Godfrey Digne

I certainly would expect him to be more finished than he is at this age.

Treble his fee is at least 60m. Go check how many CBs cost that. Let's at least be reasonable.

His time at LB showed me he's not a LB. It told me nothing about his ability to play CB. I think using his defending at LB as proof he's going to be able to defend centrally is a bad idea.

I sort of agree, we need more signings like Godfrey, but I think better value exists.

If Brighton are asking £50mil + £5mil in add ons for Ben White then Everton being a larger, wealthier club would logically ask for a higher fee for Godfrey.

I think we'll see a step up from Godfrey this season but he needs a consistent partner.

50m for Godfrey would be grand theft and we should be working round the clock to get that done before whoever it is comes to their senses.

That's true of White too. Both are fine players, both might get better, but today neither is worth that.

If you had £100mil for two centre backs who would you sign?

I don't know, I'm not exactly investing large swaths of time into scouting CBs, but I bet I could find two somewhere in the world as good as White and Godfrey and have 50m minimum left over if it were my full time job. Those prices are ridiculous. Whether you rate Ben or not if we could double our money tomorrow, given the holes in the team and lack of any assets in our squad, you have to do it and reinvest.

So, just to get straight to the point...

With £100mil to spend on 2 centre backs who would come to the club -- you cant name any better?

For me, I think a pairing of Godfrey and White would be a great partnership -- with the usual caveats of how we setup and who the RB is.

The others Ive named before like, Tapsoba, Badiashile, Torres, Kounde, Bastoni, Militao all have the 'star' quality...but as a partnership i think White and Godfrey looks good on paper.

They have a bit of 'violence' in them and a will to win...which i love.

@Eggs i know were both big fans of Godfrey.

Have you seen much of White (unlike myself)? Do you think they would make a good pairing?

No you don't. You don't get rid of one of our best prospects to only have to replace him with someone else who might not settle as well as he has done.

All those are probably better. The point wasn't that I couldn't name any. It was that we need to learn what value is. RBL have a whole fleet of CBs and they've not spent as much as we spent on Godfrey a single time. Atalanta same deal including your boy Bastoni.

The point was a competent DOF could do it. I've said a few times that I love the idea behind signing Godfrey. I don't think it has worked yet, and hopefully it still will in time, but that doesn't mean the thinking is wrong. Spending 50m on Ben White is the wrong thinking.

When it is an overpay like that you do. Same as if someone came in with 100m for DCL or 80m for Richarlison. 50m for a CB is silly money and we need a RB, CM, RW and depth everywhere. And on top of that there is still a pretty good argument that he's not even getting in our best XI.

He's definitely in our best XI in my opinion. And when you have young talents you ask for way more than their "worth" because their worth is what it means to the team they play for and how much it costs to replace them

Exactly, the Ben White price of £50-55mil is now the benchmark for a club like Brighton.

For us we'd be looking at a premium on top of that if we ever considered selling.

Why we'd want to sell a 23 year old whose on the verge of breaking into the England squad and has characteristics not many (any?) other centre backs have is beyond me though...

When you talk about 'value' youre not recognising the value of adapting into a club and league as @Wizard alluded to above.

We could drop £40mil+ on any of those 'name' players i listed and they may not adapt to the league...may not mix with the other players and may not (for foreigners) like to live in England.

The other thing to take on board is that English players carry a premium + tend to stay in England. This means that when they reach a high level of performance and the top English sides come calling you are in a position of strength.

Its also rare that an English centre back (or top player) moves overseas so youre set for the long term by snapping up quality.

Brighton turned down £35mil + add ons for White from Leeds a year ago. Theyre now reportedly after £50mil+ for him.

Thats the value of the player, its dictated by what a club is happy to sell at and what another club is prepared to pay.

On a personal note, Id also favour having young England internationals and future internationals in the squad and team.

In a back 3 White walks into the team...as a DM, White walks into the team...he probably starts as RB in a back 4 as well.

As with Godfrey you cant beat players who can play multiple positions...theyre a managers dream.

Id be thrilled if we got him and hope it isnt just paper talk.

Not only would it mean getting a partner for Godfrey but it also shows were going to be playing on the front foot for years to come AND are being decisive in the transfer market.
