I always think to myself when people mention scenarios like vlasic etc where a player left and becomes decent and if we could have done something differently?

Answer is no.

Look at Chelsea. Rom. Kdb. Salah.

It was wrong time wrong place. Just part of football best thing you can do as a club is try weave in a first refusal or something for outgoing player.

Happens all the time, player leave as not up to it. Then come good, later on. We can't compare ourselves to Chelsea at the moment. They buy everyone in the hope they will come good. Then loan them out. Not the business model we want.

Chelsea are leaving out a higher class of player. Because they already had great players in every position.

Different for us. And one may always come back and bite us, like a vlasic who’s just gone to Milan. Maybe dowell at Norwich. But 90% of them won’t be good enough including lookman. If we still had kenwright and Moyes running the ship, then lookman/vlasic/dowell etc. Probably get a lot More games. Like Rodwell, Anichebe, Vaughan.

The club are trying to compete, by spending and trying to attract a better class of player. If Tony hibbert was breaking through now, he wouldn’t make at the club and would be sold on, even Osman would struggle.

It depends how you want to see us go forward, some fans want us to go back to them days of buying cheap players from the championship and taking gambles amd players who have failed Elsewhere. With no money Moyes did an unbelievable job to get us, competing how he did. But we won nothing and finished 4th as our best finish in 11yrs. Just shows it’s an impossible job with no money. Im glad we’ve started to spend money. The tricky bit is spending it well.

If we get Dumfries and/or Lenglet then i think we'll be going with a back 3 this season.

Lenglet would have been an amazing signing 12months ago but hes just had a similar error strewn season to Gomes at Barca.

Vlasic was wasted by Koeman who wanted him on a whim after he ran us ragged for Hajduk Split but then did not really know how to use him. The kid handled his frustration badly getting into the Dutch misery guts’ kennel. Unfortunate.

I think a 352 suits us more if the budget is limited simply as we only really need a RWB, CB & back up CF (if Kean goes). We ideally would get another CM to cover/rotate with Doucoure/Allan but with Gbamin back the club maybe will risk it until January to see how we get on.

Whereas with a 433/4231 you need to add a RW to the shopping list + LW if Benard goes and good wide players tend to cost a lot of money.

Probably yeah....where's the interest? PSG only willing to take him on loan? Juve? Are they going want to be paying big money for a player they deemed sellable 18 mouths ago.

We'll be looking at the mid table Serie A taking him on loan with a view to buy in August, he's not a big sellable asset.

@Stephenlloyd and i were saying this a few months ago...either a back 4 with diamond or a back 3.

Back 3 we would only need a LCB + RWB + CM.

The other positive would be that in general all of those positions could be filled with good players who dont carry the premium wide attackers do.
