You keep stating Townsend is average like that's a fact. It isn't obviously. I know one Palace supporter. He's not upset to see Townsend gone and replaced by a 19 year old with no experience at this level. Take it for what you will.
I don't really put stock into how supporters rate players anyway. Passion leads to crazy things. People were saying two years ago that Bernard would be a useful player for any team in the league. Now he's not a useful player for any team in any reasonable league on the entire continent. He was always this bad but the passion for Everton allowed people to see it different.
I really don't understand either signing unless we're just completely out of money. And if we are I'm always going to side with the talented reclamation project over the washed up nothing player. It doesn't mean I like either.
Really if you want to know why I'm not into Townsend though the simple answer is Josh King. Not to be a prick but I was very right about Josh King.
Clearly the owner of the club isnt "completely out of money".
Thats a nonsensical argument.
There appears to be two arguments which hold a certain amount of validity:
A: Were sweeping out the deadwood that are on (mostly) £75k+ a week wages for (soon to be) deadwood on £50k or less.
This should enable us to save money on wages and bring in transfer fees.
Weve had an average £55mil net spend since Moshiri came in. If there is £55mil added to any incoming transfer fees along with saved wages (from the deadwood) made available...
...then we may see £100mil+ spent on some top young players. The concern here is a drop off in quality from 1st eleven to backup...which should be rectified next summer...
...when lots of players are out of contract (including deadwood were bringing in).
So this summer may see: Iwobi, Bernard, Keane(or another), Tosun, Kenny, Sigurdsson, Delph and Gomes moved on.
Begovic, Gray, Townsend, Lenglet(loan) coming in for nothing + RB RW CM for fees.
The excitement then depends on those 3 signings.
B: Were replacing deadwood on high wages for deadwood on low wages. Were operating in a sell to buy environment and need to rely on sales to cover the cost of any spending -- while also cutting wages.
Obviously A is preferable but B may not be a bad idea IF we are able to have a similar big spending summer next year to that of Chelsea a year ago.
For me, id be very happy with this:
GK: Pickford /
Begovic
RB: ??? / Coleman
CB: Mina /
Lenglet
CB: Godfrey / Holgate
LB: Digne / Nkounkou
DM: Gbamin / Davies
CM: Allan / Doucoure
AM: James / ???
RF: ??? /
Townsend
CF: DCL / Kean
LF: Richarlison /
Gray
*Branthwaite/Gordon/Onyango and others breaking through over the season.
IN £1.5mil
Begovic (Free)
Lenglet (Loan)
Townsend (Free)
Gray (£1.5mil)
Out £60mil
Kenny
Keane
Delph
Gomes
Sigurdsson
Bernard
Iwobi
Tosun
= £55/60mil.
I think we could 'get away' with signing just three more players...
Aarons or Emerson
Antony or Bailey
Young central player
We'd have saved a fortune in wages and massively improved our right hand side.
