Why are you using his age as of now and not when we signed him? (22)

What would you prefer?

You're correct, and it's a pair point to say the signing wouldn't be ideal. But, I think we need to look at the situation as objectively as possible.
It looks like we can't currently afford to sign a top quality, first choice right back, so to simplify the situation a bit I'd say it leaves us with three realistic options.
They are a) do nothing, b) sign a short-term stop gap on loan or c) buy a young prospect who may challenge for the first XI soon or even now.
Putting it that way, I think most would admit that C is the best option out of a far from perfect situation as long as we genuinely believe he's a good prospect.
In an ideal world, we wouldn't be relying on Seamus for the season but we're not in an ideal situation - far from it.
but Godfrey had played for three seasons of senior footy all told
That's my worry here. That we're basically saying Coleman is first choice for the season (at least).
That's completely ludicrous given we've needed a right-back for so long.
They do seem to be in such different profiles, age and experience-wise. It's weird in that respect, sure.I'd have preferred us to be making this type of transfer last year or the year before, and having that player phased in slowly and ready to go right now at the top level. Rather than risking it on a 19-year-old who's played fewer than 20 senior club games.
I also find it weird how our first target was Dumfries, yet down our list is a lad with such inexperience compared to him. Now, I obviously do not know if there were other targets – I would imagine there were/are – for the RB role. But they aren't exactly comparable in profile. But we have a habit of doing that under Brands.
You realise that's you every summer, right? And then if we finish 10-12th with these types of young players not yet ready the fanbase are up in arms:
SACK THE MANAGER
WE SHOULD BE FIGHTING FOR EUROPE
You cant have it both ways.

How long we’ve needed one has no bearing on whether this would be a good move. Coleman is the first choice now. If this kid is at least good enough to be better than Holgate/Kenny as Coleman’s backup he would be a good addition. If there is any legitimate chance that he could win the starting job this year then it’s a master stroke.but Godfrey had played for three seasons of senior footy all told

DCL wasn't good enough for 2-3 seasons thats my point - Coleman needs booting now not in 2-3 seasons when this kid is realistically ready.
