Ancelotti has been trying all season to get James behind DCL and Richalrison, for a number of reasons it hasn’t happened. Here’s a few:

We don’t have a right back who can cross a ball

We don’t have any mobile midfielders apart from Docuoure and Allan who have both been injured.

Keane and Mina can’t run.

Richalrison seemingly can’t use his left foot any more.

We’ve literally played 433 with James coming in behind the two strikers. 3412 with wingbacks, 442 with a diamond. Ancelotti has tried all of them but the only formation this group seems to be able to play is 4231 with Richalrison and Iwobi out wide because it’s the only formation that means the midfielders don’t have to run much and the right back doesn’t have to create anything.
I’ve said for a while, I think wing backs wouid. Be the best system.

we would need a left sided CB, quality attacking wing back. New CM. To compete for 2 positions with Allan, Doucoure, Gbamin and Davies. Sell the rest.

James and siggurdsson for the 10 role and 3 strikers. If we get rid of Bernard amd iwobi, we may need another forward who can play wide to give us more options from
The bench

433 wont work with this group of players, even with adding the 4 you say.

Transfermarkt has him playing attacking midfield twice in over 300 appearances.

I'm sure we could sign him it is more a question of being worth it. He's got penalties helping his goal totals a lot. Since he had what is currently and outlier of 26 goals he's never hit more than 16 and his best mark taking out pens is 10. At 27 I don't really see the point unless he's basically free.
But who are we going to attract better who’s happy, well maybe happy isn’t the right word, to compete for a place. We’ve tried a youngster ie kean. Or go for a 30 something free transfer. And if ones on the market, who’s top class. He will have his pick of clubs. So we will be left Witt the dregs. Which will be even more pointless as they will want decent wages and a signing on fee.

You said 3 Strikers.

But the main issue is the 2 in midfield, we would lose every midfield battle.
I disagree. And If you have quality CB’s they can step into midfield and your number 10 can drop, or you wing back can tuck in.

If you’re up against a 3 man midfield, you will have spare men elsewhere

I think it would be a lot easier than people think to find a decent striking option. The likes of Bamford, Pukki, Chris Wood, Josh King, Callum Wilson and Glenn Murray have all scored 10+ goals in the PL in the last 2/3 seasons. You really don't have to be looking for another Haaland, there are players who'd be happy to come here and relatively cheap who could do a good job for us. Good scouting, as always, is the key.

I think the problem is, we have kind of done that with King, but people generally want more.

I can see why King on a free, with a pre season behind him is a no brainer, but can also see why other people are underwhelmed.

That’s why I said wing backs in 3412

Chelsea played a 343 under Conte and it worked pretty well but it was largely reliant on Kante and Matic being brilliant int he middle, Hazard just being out of this world, Luiz and Azpilicueta playmaking from the back, and Alonso and Moses providing creativity from wingback.

When you look at our team we don’t have most of those ingredients. We’d need to buy them in as you say.

The quality of the squad is massively overhyped in my view. Teams like Chelsea have a number of solutions to play anyway they want, every player has pace and creativity so that changing formation is a tactical exercise to outwit the opponent.

We change formation to find one that covers the many limitations of our players to give us a chance to win the game. That’s the difference. Tuchel is thinking ‘is the aerial ability of Giroud better for this game or is Werner’s speed a better option’. Carlo is thinking ‘which one of these midfielders has looked less tragic in training this week’

People don’t want to hear the simple message that until we give Ancelotti a squad that’s from 1-24 can compete with City, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, Leicester then lo and behold we probably won’t be in the top 4 regularly. At the moment though the season long view isn’t being taken. So in a stretch of games against top 6 opposition we will beat Spurs Liverpool Arsenal Chelsea and this is all well and good but when we then lose in the cup quarters, or away to Chelsea or City, it’s all ‘why can’t Ancelotti get more from these players in a one off game’. It’s a complete double standard which is muddying the waters of this debate at the moment.

In my view the squad isn’t good enough to play most formations apart from a simple 4231. We need to buy a lot of better players to give our world class manager the options he needs to compete.

Personally I don't see the benefit of 3 at the back for 95% of teams in the league.

We should approach most games on the front foot.

Yeah I get that. I maybe didn't explain what I meant very well. I'm not saying we should sign one of those players - or even someone with a similar profile - just that you don't have to be a £35m teenager or a former world class player on the way down in order to be a decent option for a team like us. It may well be that there's an unheralded bloke in the French league or the Portuguese league or wherever who could come in and be a good fit.
