Gomes seems to be struggling with the same confidence issues that have plagued his career. The frustrating thing is, I get the feeling there is a great player in there, somewhere. He's shown it glimpses. The problem is, he is constantly in the same team as either James or Sigurdsson, so he needs to put himself about more to make up for their shortcomings physically, and to be fair to him, the stats do back up the fact that he has by an large done that. But in doing so, he has lost what he was signed to do, what he proved early on he could do, and that is dictate tempo and be the brains.
If he was in a team that was set up for him to be the floater, I think he would, or at least could, thrive, but we are not strong enough in other areas to allow him that freedom, and frankly, he is not on the same level as James.
If we could get minimum what we paid for him back, it would be a no brainer, but honestly, in the back of mind, I think there's a player there, and so I'd be looking to shift Sigurdsson and Bernard before him, as they are older, on higher wages, are less valuable, less versatile, and generally, don't offer as much as Gomes does.
He does need to start offering more though, certainly in final 3rd.
