I think Allan is better box to box but if we are able to have Gbamin, Allan and Davies who can all play DM then thats very good quality squad depth...if we play with one DM.

We need more quality in the box to box area and more competition there too. I think its guaranteed that we will sign a top central midfielder who can also play as a defensive midfielder due to Ancelotti wanting to 'close up shop' at times when were ahead.

Agree, I think it's clear Allan is a midfielder who likes to hunt the ball, rather than sit and Gbamin could do the sitting 6 job, allowing him and Doucoure to do what they're actually good at and push on. Allan's also good in the sense that he can also cover any of a midfield 3's positions quite comfortably. So as you say, you'd have two viable DMs in Gbamin and Allan and then Davies as 3rd choice at DM, which I agree is good depth.

In my opinion that'd mean the signing would have to be one that is a bit more offensive personally. Either a Tielemans or Mount-style player. I'd prefer we didn't go for a defensive player as I think we lack enough guile going forward/in possession as it is.

Neto, Celik, Koulibaly

Dump the 14 duds

Sell Kean (id like to see him stick around). Holgate or Mina

Mitrovic as a bench player, could be our Andy Gray

Simple
Not sure those three have the pace we need also we still need another midfielder a more attacking dynamic playmaker I think

Everton and West Ham are both still keen on signing Napoli defender, Nikola Maksimovic, according to a report from FC Inter News.

Maksimovic was linked with a move to England in the January window, with Il Mattino claiming at the time that Spurs were in talks over a potential £9m deal for the defender.

However, now move ever materialised for Spurs or anyone else, even though both the Hammers and Toffees were said to be admirers of the defender at the time.

The 29-year-old Serbian is said to be open to leaving the Italian club and it is expected that a number of clubs will make a move for Maksimovic in the summer, with a bidding war likely.

Inter Milan are also said to be interested in the defender, who could prove a valuable addition for any potential suitors. The centre-back has been a regular for Napoli this season anyway, and, per Transfermarkt, is approaching the 100 appearances mark for the Naples club

If you subscribe to the Athletic there is a very good article on Gbamin
He played mainly as a 6 but his pace and power allowed him to carry the ball forward from deep in his own half to well into the opposition half
His ability to switch play with long diagonal balls from the No 6 position was also a strength of his
If and I said IF he turns out to be the player we thought we signed he will be a valuable addition to the squad
The Athletic is well worth the Euro a MONTH for the subscription
I have the app but it won’t let me subscribe, but I can literally read as many articles as I want on there somehow, not sure how it’s happened though haha

Heres 3 things i am wondering:

1: Big name players not in a top 4 side

Under the assumption that we put down an acceptable offer for the player and offered a high wage...

If Rice doesnt go to United, who will sign him for £60mil+ ? Where does Soucek go? Could Moyes want one of our players in a swap deal...i dont know.

Will Neto and Neves get a move to a top 4 side?

These players would all cost a heavy premium but we 'may' have somewhat of a chance of signing them.

2: Young potential superstars overseas

Inter are desperate for money, could we get Lautaro? Bastoni? Hakimi?

Camavinga, Gravenberch, Kounde, Aouar, Wirtz, Tapsoba, Kamara, Bellingham, Bailey, Locatelli, Emerson etc etc

If we offer the money then would these types of players join the club to play for Ancelotti and know they can get regular game time?

Weve seen Bellingham supposedly turn United down as he wanted regular games which he got in Dortmund. Would players prefer to join us to make their mark on the premier league?

3: Players from less successful premier league teams

Bissouma and Lamptey at Brighton of course and (once they are promoted) Aarons and Buendia at Norwich...

These types of signings are less risky than overseas but due to the tv deal carry the premium -- the same goes for even championship players these days.

Are they big fish in a small pond and can they be a bigger fish in a larger pond?

Beyond these 3 options we of course have the discounted / out of contract older star players like Koulibaly and Ramos for example...those whose clubs are from 'weaker' leagues and perhaps the option of loans to buy as West Ham managed to do with Soucek.

The three main options would be the route i would primarily favour...where we are now i think we need to be building a team to carry us for the next 5-10 years of players whose values will increase and that we could sell at a huge premium to recycle players as Leicester, Dortmund and Atletico etc have done. But who can make an impact for us today.

If you pick out one player from each of those 3 options then you could expect our team to look far stronger next season.

We will need to spend serious money to break into that top 4 and stay there.

A lot of interesting thoughts in this.

I am not sure I would count Neves and Neto for example, as streets ahead of say Bissouma on this seasons performances. Brighton are a funny team, I live near there and they play a lot better stuff than the league table suggests. Everytime I've seen Bissouma over some time, I've been quite impressed and they are near to Wolves in the table. He just feels to me like someone who would be well suited to playing in a better team, whereas with Neves, I just sense he would need the team built around him.

In general though, you are lowering the risk by signing such players. I'm probably an increasingly big fan, of the "don't mess it up, don't lose money " school of thought.

Serie A players would offer a potential avenue into that, particularly those with Carlo's blessing. So we may see a bit of a mixed approach.

Neto to me would make a lot of sense, but I suspect he may go to a United.

I was surprised he wasn't buried after the performance last week, but was pleasantly surprised at how forgiving people were with him.

What really hit me, as I said after the game was how big he looked. He looks absolutely enormous and you can see by how he takes the ball, he is comfortable on the ball. The aim will be to have him right for next season, but if we are patient, he could make a big difference. It's interesting they see him as a similar type to Doucoure. If we can add a third reliable player, with then Davies and Allan as quite reliable options, we finally have what might be approaching a number of decent midfield options.

I can see why people like Klopp looked very closely at Gbamin though. He has a fantastic build.
