It's both. They aren't exclusive. You can both need better players and think the manager is underperforming with what he currently has.

And no we won't be able to buy the best players which is why we need another plan. I doubt we have it.
 
When all players are fully fit, we are still 2/3 first players short if we have ambitions to break into the Top 4

3 Goalkeepers
Pickford / Virginia

8 Defenders
Digne / Godfrey / Mina / Holgate / Coleman / Keane / Nkounkou

6 Midfielders
Gomes / Doucoure / Allan / Davies / Delph

6 Attackers
DCL / Richarlison / James / Sigurdsson / Iwobi / Bernard

We are missing a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and that doesn't include the players on loan:
Kean
Tosun
Simms
Gordon
Branthwaite

So it's going to be a fun summer with some ins and hopefully plenty of outs.

Your logic is sound. Your beliefs about the present quality of the squad are not.

Some depth and a less compressed schedule would be huge.

As much as I don't rate some of the players there are at least some functional pieces if we get the top players in around them. Doucoure being an example. But I still don't like spending reasonably big sums on guys who can be passable in a good system only.

OK, but then Carlo's doing a good job getting results from a batch of players no one could get a tune out of without squad additions.

You can't have it both ways.

Again these aren't exclusive. I'd like to see better players. I'd also like to see a manager who has a sense of direction to his tactics. It really can be both ways.

Then your complaint is not that Carlo is underperforming. It's that he's a pragmatist rather than a system manager.

The issue, then, is that you misspoke.

It's not just about the first team players though. We need a whole squad of top players.

No point in getting a top quality right winger if their backups is Iwobi. Same for left wing if Richy moves out there again no point in having Benrard backup. Holgate for Coleman, Davies for Allan, Gomes for Doucoure etc etc.

We've seen this season how just one of two long term injuries mess things up. All the teams around us have quality throughout the whole squad and that's how they sustain the PL performance with Europe and Cup runs.

I don't agree. A lot of teams around us struggled when their key players were out. Man City and Chelsea have enormous and expensive squads to the point where players not even on their benches would get into our team so they don't count but the rest suffered with injuries from time to time. We can't simply have quality back up for every position because those back ups would want to be first choice elsewhere. Having said that we definitely need to move some out because they aren't great rotation options either like Iwobi etc. The best we can hope for is 2 good mids as rotation to 3 first choice... 1 or 2 if lucky rotation options for front three and 3 back ups for defense. These players will have to get games too regularly for it to work, not just waiting for injuries. Important for team spirit too
