I have said this loads of times, our defenders dont have it in them to defend in a backs against the wall style. They always let you down in the end when it really matters. This has gone on for years, way before Martinez even.

We had like the 3rd best defence in the league a few years ago. Just watch them over the last 2 seasons and you can see they're so unorganised. A proper manager that knows how to set up a team will do wonders. No need to blow big money on a CB unless John gets sold

No this is where people get confused/conned.

What is a good defence? You can keep clean sheets or have a good goals against column as much as you like, for me they dont really matter.

What matters and what makes a defence good for me is that they step up when you need them. When the big games come around.Can they keep a clean sheet in a cup semi final or a big derby game, a European night etc? No they cant, they never have been able to do that and always let you down.

You could concede 38 goals in a season. Thats a respectable enough figure but does that tell the whole story? What if every game was lost 0-1 with a stupid defensive error? Stats can be twisted any way you want.

Put it another way, over the past say, 15 years. Have you ever sat there with our defence holding a tight lead in a big game and thought "we have got this here"? Or like me have you sat there thinking "oh god these are going to score, its so Everton" etc.

We have lacked a proper leader at the back for years now.

Last year. Cleverley and Geri signed early in the summer.

We knew how to defend a lead 2004/5. It's hard to judge our defenders after 3 years of Martinez though. He was clueless when it came to defending.

What truly big games did we have in that season? I get that the United win was big for us in terms of ending a long losing streak there but at the end of the day we didnt box off the top 4 finish as we imploded when it really mattered again.
