What truly big games did we have in that season? I get that the United win was big for us in terms of ending a long losing streak there but at the end of the day we didnt box off the top 4 finish as we imploded when it really mattered again.
Can't blame that purely on the defence, entire team bottled it.

Do agree our defence isn't world beaters and especially the full backs are overrated defensively but they're still one of the top 5-6 group of defenders in the league when organised properly. Certainly doesn't warrant spending a fair amount on a CB when we're trying to juggle ffp and have more pressing issues

We knew how to defend a lead 2004/5. It's hard to judge our defenders after 3 years of Martinez though. He was clueless when it came to defending.

Even in that season we got some hammerings. 7-0 vs Arsenal? 5-2 vs Spurs, and of course the next season they let us down even more.

Mind you thats probably going back a but too much. I think all I am saying is a defence with Coleman, Jagielka and Baines in it will never come through when it really matters as history has shown that with us. Thats not even a knock at the players, I love them all its just how it is.

Martinez exposed their flaws (every player has them) more than most but that doesn't mean the flaws don't exist any more.

None of the CBs can head a ball being crossed in though! Its a massive worry to me. FFP will be fine.

I honestly dont think our other issues are that pressing. Depends who stays and goes I suppose.

Seriously, bony isn't as good as everyone makes out. City fans hate him.

Giroud would never come to us, thats why i said be reslistic.

Bacca is nearly 30.

Milik is wayy to much of a gamble. He plays in a weak league and is very young with no PL experience.

Pelle is not better than Bony.

Why Zaza? Didn't he score like 4 goals last season?. I don't really know much about him to be honest.

Again Bony scored 26 goals in 54 appearances for Swansea. He's still only 27 and he has PL experience. He would shine under the way we play.

Ffp is a problem unless we make room by selling a player.

Jags can head a ball, though is suddenly prone to letting it bounce all of a sudden and Mori near enough always finishes games having contested and won the most headers in the game. The whole no one does headers thing is a myth, if you let in a bigillion crosses per game a few will find the opposition. Full backs need to stop crosses better.

We easily need a cm, another playmaker, someone for the left, striker, goalkeeper, second rb all more than a CB

Eh, debatable.

I think simone zaza spent a lot of time behind Mandzukic and Dyabala, hence the lack of minutes and goals. At Sassuolo he was getting a decent run and return of goals, if I remember they also had Domenic Berardi and Nicola Sansone so three good attackers to choose from.

Zaza: Decent player, could be used as cover for Lukaku but only at the right price.
Bony: Found wanting in City's team but always a difficult task to cover Aguero. Again right price.
Pelle: 10-15 goals a year striker, hold up play and technique is good but around the age of 30 now so be careful.
Millik: Promising but playing in a poor league, either A) buy him now and take a chance, or B) Let say Swansea buy him and we pay £30m if he is a success.
Bacca: Deadly as a finisher but not the best for all round play, if we had pelle and bacca we may make something out of it but again 30 years old, maybe not good enough as Romelu's replacement.
Giroud: Goalscorer when on form. Probably the best replacement for Romelu out of the ones mentioned, costly buy though as arsene seems to stick with him.

other strikers ?

Vincent Janssen, bit of a gamble from the dutch league.
Javier Hernandez, Goalscorer when given the right service.
Loic Remy, Age may be a concern and also injury prone.
Edin Dzeko, Looking for another chance in England ?
Domenic Berardi, like Simone Zaza gets a decent return but may be costly as im sure Juventus basically used him to get Zaza, some sort of third party ownership or something - could be a issue.

Cant really think of many others right now, all depends on Romelu and if he feels we are worthy enough of his greatness..... D!ck Head.

Esk said our new keeper will begin with a B so if he doesn't he can relinquish his ITK-ness (;

And we 100% dunno what you're all chatting we only have 3 senior with 1 likely to be sold and another nearly 35. If we want to have tactical flexibility to play 3 at the back some games (against your Watford's and Leicester's) we need I'd say 2x more senior CB's to complement current + Browning & Galloway. Jags needs replacing this summer to transition.

Zaza works well as a lone front man (@ Sassuolo) and he's very good in the air so not a bad shout. Good goals/mins this season too. Be good if he's getting lots of decent crosses; got the correct physicality for our league.

Made up you mentioned this Sage, the centre halfs were getting slaughtered at one point last year regarding crosses. What worried me was the lack of support from the wing backs, also Barry gets caught for pace in getting back to help the centre backs, leaving McCarthy to do his headless chicken routine covering for him. It worked so well in Roberto's first year but not after that.

Getting the defence sorted, in particular a keeper to command his box, coupled with Baines and Coleman helping stop the crosses coming in to begin with may help the centre half's defend crosses better. I also thought Martinez and his lack of two wingers to support baines and coleman from stopping crosses was also lacking. I still hope we get big Steeeevvvveeeee in goal :D
