Left field one, but I wouldn't be opposed to us going for Berhanio at a cut price fee if WBA are willing to sell.

That's on the assumption that Rom will be off in the summer.

Roberto Martinez has hinted that he may look for a new right-back in the January transfer window - after injuries to Seamus Coleman and Tyias Browning have given him a selection headache for the next month.

Coleman sustained a calf injury in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday which will rule him out for a three week spell when the Blues have seven matches.

With Tyias Browning also ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery and Tony Hibbert struggling with scar tissue on his calf, Martinez said: “We have players in the squad who can play in that right-back slot but it’s an area we will look at in this market to see if there’s anyone we can bring in, not just someone for the sake of it, but someone who can help us in that role.”

Promising Leeds United starlet Sam Byram has been linked with the Blues - and the Yorkshire club has indicated that the 22-year-old may be allowed to leave in January.

But Martinez added: “I wouldn’t speak about any player who is not registered with us.”

The Blues boss did insist, however, that with Phil Jagielka now fit again, John Stones would not be moved across to fill a role he has accommodated for England.

“If you move him you lose two players,” he said. “We won’t do that. John can play as a right back and he will always give you that option but I think at the moment we need to be strong and balanced in the squad.

“John Stones as a right back would be losing one of the best centre-halfs in world football.”

With Romelu Lukaku and Tom Cleverley joining Seamus Coleman on the injured list for the visit of Dagenham and Redbridge this weekend, Martinez will utilise his squad.

Skipper Phil Jagielka will return, Steven Pienaar will feature and Darron Gibson and Aiden McGeady could get rare run-outs.

Leandro Rodriguez has been sidelined

Youngsters Conor McAleny and Matthew Pennington could also feature, but Mason Holgate is injured while Uruguayan striker Leandro Rodriguez will be in the squad but is not fully match fit and unlikely to start.

“Leandro hasn’t been training enough to see him fully fit,” added Martinez. “I don’t think he’s match fit enough to make a big contribution in this competition. But it’s good for him to be around the squad.

“We have other young players like Conor McAleny who could be involved in the squad but clearly it’s a game where players like Phil Jagielka coming back from a long spell out and Steven Pienaar is probably the biggest highlight for us in this game.

“We have a strong squad and it’s a senior squad – it’s not a short squad where we have to use youngsters. It’s been the opposite and you will have a lot of senior players with a big opportunity at the weekend. Clearly they are going to give us a lot of information going forward.”

The return of skipper Jagielka has particularly pleased Martinez.

“I think it’s fair to say that he was our player of the season by a mile last campaign - not just performing on the pitch but understanding what is needed, the direction, the leadership and a calming influence on the pitch at key moments which helps so much. “He has been a real good influence already in the last week - and now having him available and fully fit and able to introduce him in a game at the weekend is an incredible prospect.”

The papers lol, it doesnt say anywhere he wants to sign a right back.

They seem to mean this bit:

“We have players in the squad who can play in that right-back slot but it’s an area we will look at in this market to see if there’s anyone we can bring in, not just someone for the sake of it, but someone who can help us in that role.”

i think it's getting clearer by the day that we're edging to a massive overhaul in the squad, by the end of this summer at the latest. For years under moyes, we moaned about a lot of deadwood that we hoped to get rid of ... in essence, we didn't have a squad big enough, partly due to moyes not willing to promote youngsters.

I would have laughed you about 3 weeks ago saying we'll get rid of naismith, mcgeady and gibson as that was more what people wanted rather than what they expected to happen, but today it does seem a decent possibility. There's no way we'll let so many attacking players go without bringing one in, surely?

With a few others like pienaar and osman, who are played sporadically coming to the end of their contracts, there is the possibility of a mass change in the summer. The first team is almost totally different in just 3 years to that of moyes' last season, but there are still the remains of his era behind. Most of them are too old and too injury prone, it can only be a good thing, this overhaul imo. A new everton who don't go into massive games knowing at best they'll draw. You can't win trophies like that.

I just hope martinez doesn't go overboard with youth, we already have a lot of youngsters, which could mean an amazing team in 6 or 7 years time, but we'll have finances to start bossing before then.
