Wasn't there controversy over him because we got him based on that "elite player performance" thing where you only have to pay a fairly low set fee? I could be thinking of someone else though.

I thought the best ever bargain transfer we did was Cahill for 2m. Deulofeu for 3m could be even better though especially since how mental the prices for players have shot up since we signed timmy!

What if Martinez is buying all these promising young players to sell them on for huge fees later on, then buy even better ones since he'd have loads of doe? For example:

Stones: £3m, now worth £40m (I know Martinez didn't sign Stones, but he developed him)

Lukaku: £28m, now worth £50m

Deulofeu: £4m, now worth £30m when you take out the buyback clause

Barkley: Free, now worth £45m

Our 4 best players are all worth £155m, which is a ginormous sum. Imagine the squad we could buy with that cash! Martinez would have the world at his feet with £155m.

Think it was a low up front fee but lots of add on's if he hit certain targets, first team debut etc. Probably a sell on fee as well I'd guess, seems to be how we are structing our youth purchases as think we've done similar for Holgate.

I've said before that if we took the Atletico model and spent all the money from a sale on a replacement then selling our best players wouldn't hurt us too much. If we take the Spurs/Liverpool model and replace our best player with 9 average players then it'll be back to the beginning again.

While that sum seems nice I'd much rather keep the "proven" youth we have and build around them for the future as I think if we keep them and add a few more quality pieces we'd be title contenders soon enough.
