I think Holgate is more than capable. He looks a player and spent a lot of time playing full back during his academy time and time at Barnsley.
As back up I'd say he's more than adequate. Can always re-visit in Jan if needed

It seems to me that the manager who we went out our way to get and the fella who built a league winning team out of misfits and average players actually are doing something decent here.
Take the individuals out of it , on the whole the team actually looks quite good as a unit when these signings are made. If we aren't signing ingredients individuals and signing parts to a team unit then that is quite impressive in all honesty.

have any of our signings (Steckelenberg, Williams, Bolasie, Gueye) really improved last seasons starting xi?
I think we've prioritised about right Macca. Our defence was an absolute shambles last season, a bloody embarrassment game after game. Bringing in 2 big lads like Williams and Kone imo instantly makes us look like a bigger defensive unit. Bolasie ( if he signs ) offers us a Left winger and an out ball with pace, or someone to support Rom. the Villa kid by all accounts is there to chase down and hassle the opposition, something none of our midfield seem to do. Even Stekkers in goal looks like an upgrade on what we've had for a while.
Granted we still need more quality and depth, GK, CM and up top but if we just cut out the absolute crap defending from last season, well I reckon we can instantly add 15 points onto the board.
