Everton Transfer Thread 2016

Nobody wants to spunk money for the sake of it. They question whether the money was really ever there in the first place and whether talk of Joe Heart, Mahrez, Draxler, Witsel, Koulibaly, Mata, Carvalo was ever realistic.

As a kid, I remember watching the local news in 1996, when they announced that Everton were disappointed that Alan Shearer had decided to join Newcastle instead of us. I was eight at the time but me and my dad started laughing. We knew it was a load of rubbish and we never had a realistic chance of signing him. We bid less than his boyhood club who at the time were challenging for the title.

So forgive Evertonians for being cynical.

In fairness, if people scroll through the players sold on this link, people will see that with the exception of the top clubs not many have added real quality in this window, despite the hysteria https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_football_transfers_summer_2016

We can have all the money in the world - but you will struggle to sign the "top" players if we face the reality that we are a mid-table team with no euro football, no recent success and we have been festering away for well over two decades. That's the reality. We can't force players to sign. You can't spend the big bucks if that calibre of player is not interested. Sad, but it seems the way it is. Witsel would rather spend another year in Russia than sign for us. A lot of the others you listed would see signing for us as a sideways/backwards step. We need to raise our profile to attract the best - unfortunately, we need to to that by bagging Euro football.

If those four end up being Bolasie, Kone, Mata and a keeper, we've had a great window.

That's counting no outgoings - which there will be more of... and they would then be replaced
They'd be good signings but still lacks a ball playing cm and another decent striker, they're our biggest needs right now so in that sense it would be a poor window

Hopefully not. Manager wanting 2 more as it stands. These two more could be the difference or it could just be more squad players. Time will tell on that.

"We have discussions with the board and with Steve Walsh, and we want three or four more players." From Koeman at the press conference

Exactly this. We where always going to have an awkward start. Citeh left it till the very last moment to sign Stones. We got the best deal we could before they had to declare a CL squad. They left it till deadline day because they could. We could have accepted a lot less weeks ago.

For the sake of 1 or 2 league games and a home tie with Yeovil, it is worth it. Hopefully we can have the squad ready to fire on all cylinders in a few weeks. Bit frustrating but it is a marathon, not a sprint.

Spurs are a difficult fixture though.
If we had the money and we were waiting on Stones due to STCC would it not have been wise to accept a lower offer or to compromise and accept someone like Bony as part payment.

It looks to me we held out for as much as we could get no matter what the consequences which tells it's own story.
