Lukaku had previously been on load at west brom, eto stayed with us for literally a few months, mirallas has been very inconsistent and would hardly have called a marquee

Mirallas turned down Arsenal for us.

Eto had just been at Chelsea.

Lukaku was and is still a talent that other named clubs were after when we bought him.

Maybe just me, but its about making statements when signing players.

We're not talking Pogba like superstar names, but we're talking talented players from Champions League clubs.

At the moment we're not even finding gems for good prices. We're paying Harrods prices at Aldi.

There is one marquee name there at the time of their signature, and that is Romelu Lukaku.

None of the others are marquee. Hell Lennon was frozen out and training with the bloody reserves.

I'd say we haven't really made many statement signings other than Lukaku.

Maybe Fellaini or Yakubu? can't think of many in the past decade.

Disagree. Signing proven talent for an immediate pump up the table...even if we fall short of CL or EL is first and foremost the most important thing about THIS SEASON. If we can achieve a higher place in the table and show that we are progressing forward, we may well find it easier to get deals over the line.

Martinez's strategy was a risky one. I could see what he was efforting to do, but in the end it is a flawed strategy because there is far too much inconsistency from a team full of young players who are still learning their trade. For example I expect Williams to improve us from a defensive perspective immediately. Stones is still a project. Barkley, Rom, and Del all suffered through huge peaks and valleys in their game. You will see a more consistent team when you are playing with established players.

Liverpool have Europe and a much bigger name and they don't seem to be able to attract the top players either. Europa league helps a bit certainly but champions league is the game changer.

I also don't think top class youngsters like Martial in his first season would be any less effective than Bolasie and I quite like Bolasie. Of course it doesn't always work out and for every Martial you get a Depay but even so I would prefer to have a Depay on the books than a McGeady.
