Initially I believe Koeman rejected us - so there must have been very hard-nosed negotiations in terms of a guaranteed budget amongst other factors to convince him to join. I want to believe, and do believe that the resources are there, mostly as I'm sick to death of pessimism and negativity surrounding Everton.
If there has been a shift in emphasis to trying to sign more modest targets, then I don't have an issue with that. People say we have a big squad but with respect to several of the players, there is a lot of filler amongst them - Kone, Oviedo, Gibson, Cleverly, Lennon - players who are either past their best, consistently poor or average, injury-prone, or a combination of all three. This is without taking Niasse and McGeady into account who were discarded almost immediately.
I don't agree with the theory that it's the likes of Witsel or bust to improve the squad - it should not be difficult in some cases to acquire players who are sufficiently better than what we already have. If Moshiri had come out and stated Koeman had to deliver the title or top 4 this season, then expecations would be different. He hasn't and the club have to operate within the realities of our current position as they are unfolding.
So, presuming we still have a large amount of cash still in reserve, I would at least like to see us sensibly using that to provide cover in areas where it's needed. There is nothing much we can do if we can't attract our A-List targets but my expectation for the next week or so is that we sign 3 or 4 players to make us as strong as we can feasibly be at this point.
There would be grounds for justifiable criticism in my view if that fails to materialise. But we have more than a week to get more players in and I am still hopeful.
