Was discussing this with a mate the other day but something that I'd be normally dead against might be a solution, sales pending.
It's going to be a tough time to do business before October for anyone, never mind the likes of us and we may not be splashing the cash everywhere like we need to be doing.
So what if we take a year off? Plug gaps rather than invest too much?
I know it sounds silly to say and it wouldn't work in reality but try and poach a few free players for a year to do a job. Namely the likes of Silva , higuian/cavani etc. Use ancelottis pull to get them here and have a season out of them.
They are better than what we have for the next year and who knows what difference they could make.

Would be shocked if any of them signed for a year only.

Had penned a response agreeing with you... but keep on thinking about the exceptions... Howard, Neville, Lukaku, Saha, Digne and to some extent Mina who came from big clubs and performed very well for us either as a leader or in performances... we have Delph and Gomes who both might have been more to do with injuries.
I was going to agree because I like seeing players step up and show clear passion for the badge. but to be fair.. buying off the big clubs seems to have paid off by and large.

True maybe im being unfair on Tomori - just think the quality in Barca/Madrid/Bayern etc cast offs are higher than the current Utd/Arse/Chelsea sides.
I'll be honest If we were finding a CB on loan I wouldn't mind Stones back alongside Holgate - atleast both would allow us to play out from the back alot quicker.
