I think some modern managers are too full of their 'philosophy' to do anything as basic as getting crosses into the opposition penalty box.

Holland hadn't laid a glove on Argentina and were heading out of the competition until they put a big guy up front and got the ball in the box. Argentina were all at sea. After Holland got the equaliser they stopped doing what had been successful for them.

Can someone explain to me why our centre backs weren’t dragged out of position all game. That seemed to be an incurable problem until today.

All about the shape and balance of the team for me. My biggest criticism of Lampard was how he set up his midfield players. He changed it game to game and seemed to have no idea how to get it right. Our defenders are not great 1v1 in space so keeping things compact means there's so much less exposure for the center backs and full backs. And we see the result, all four players can play to their strengths and not get exposed. It wasn't a totally low block either. The shape and compactness means that there's always support.

Yeah I don't get the signing either but we needed back-up and the board failed in his top target and mikel's always had a thing for him, weird really.
