....the hope is that often the worst looking pre-match selection turns out ok. Fingers crossed.

....I posted this before the game, it’s amazing how often pre-match team selection fume transpires with a very decent performance. In this instance, with most posters unhappy (me included) the theory worked again.

I thought we were terrific, much improved attitude and tempo to our play. Plenty of square pegs in round holes, but I actually prefer Holgate as a back-up RB. Godfrey was very good and I hope those that those who posted he looks a waste of money are now having second thoughts. Saying that, it’s a matter of time that Godfrey will be found out playing LB and needs to be alongside Keane ASAP to see him to greatest effect.

it helped that Chelsea played Giroud through the middle and no conventional wide players who could exploit our weakness behind the back four, but nonetheless every player was up for the challenge of winning their own personal battles.

Allan & Keane worthy of mention but I went for DCL as my MoM. Not long ago many called him a ‘Championship Player’, last night was a severe test for him as he was up against proper athleticism and quality defenders yet he made the critical difference. I also have a ‘team bus theory’, whether the opposition CBs on their way home talk with respect about the striker they have just faced and DCL consistently passes that test every game, he’s become one of our most important players.

Holgate should be 1st choice RB.

Great performance that, just what we needed, defensively solid, now we ned to find the balance but injuries don't help with that.

Gave MotM to Godfrey as he was out of position and played superbly but a few had good games. The keeper still gives me nightmares with high balls, he can't catch and can barely punch.

Agreed. You have been saying all week that this game was a banker and I backed you up all the way. We should both feel very exonerated in harbouring such confidence ( unlike many on here who were very pessimistic)

No game is a "banker" but the amount of white flags that were flying around were ridiculous...I made one comment regarding this match and it goes for every opponent. It's the same attitude we used to have when we had less capable sides but there are too many watching Sky now...bend the knee, bend the knee.

I think there were plenty of white flags before the game because of Carlo’s selections and formations in recent games plus the attitude of a few players. Carlo selected the formation many fans were advocating and the players reacted and carried out the plan, nothing magical about it, they went out and did what they should be doing in every game, give their all and let the opposition know they were there, they did it well, now they have to add consistency to yesterdays performance, those of us who moaned about the performances of the team over the last few games were right to do so, nothing to moan about yesterday, let’s carry on like that v Leicester on Wednesday and beyond.

Godfrey played well but keane was quality. Everyone put a proper shift in and a cheeky peno by everyone's fave player siggy and a clean sheet for everyones fave keeper. The rage of some of some of the fans with keane, siggy and pickford doing well lol

yes, with something of a chromatic ambiguity, the number of white flags belied a red one...a coupon IED. Thankfully, the prescience of sage forum members such as you and me, hopefully alerted fellow GOTers to the minefield on which they were treading with their accumulators which had Chelsea odds-on to win.
I do not expect many will thank us for our perspicacity, but you and I can sleep well this week knowing we shed some guiding light to fellow Evertonians.

was beat all ends up for both free kicks but got a decent touch to James shot that hit the post. Some good kicking and nearly got lobbed after coming to punch a ball away. Usual mixed bag from Pics
The fact that he came and made that punch, commanding his area is something I’ve wanted him to do for a while. The vital touch he got to the free kick at full stretch was excellent goalkeeping and a vital part in why we got 3 points
