Just got home from the match

I really think this whole Barcelona tactic of "Killing them with passing" really isn't for us in all honesty

Even Barcelona weren't always Barcelona, if you get my meaning. You have to start out somewhere, some days it comes off and looks great, others days its hard going, but you never give up trying because that's how you believe the game should be played.

We are two or three seasons away from being a Martinez team. A lot of people are judging us as a finished product whereas we are only 8 games (not including pre-season) into the "rebuild". It will be a small rebuild as he will already have highlighted players that he just doesn't fancy fitting into his system.

The fact that we can produce a start like this this early, to borrow Roberto's vernacular, is both phenomenal and incredible.

Why did he have to go for wholesale change though?

I mean. we played some nice football at times last season. All Martinez had to do was get us to attack more. You don't need tippy tappy stuff for that

I didnt like that we kept doing it when it was obvious that Hull were pressing really high against our defenders. Way too risky.

But we won so in not arsed.

...the Manager clearly thinks this is the right way. Normally it would be one step forward, two steps back but he's getting victories despite the change. Can't complain.

Yeah, a fair point.

I think he's quite brave. He could have just carried on with Moyes formations and gradually evolved the team over a longer period of time. The fact that he's changed the footballing ethos so absolute and so quick is proper ballsy in my opinion.

The longer term success will be the barometer of whether it was wise to do so but it will be an interesting journey nonetheless.

COYBs!!!

The fact that there was virtually a full house for a game against Hull City speaks volumes for the new appeal of Martinez' Everton side.

Very exciting time to be an Evertonian!

Hello lads,

I haven't read anyone's views or opinions yet, I've came straight in with my own.

Everton played well today, I wouldn't say solid as such but we played well enough to get the win and should've easily been 3-1.

The referee was a bit out of his depth and Hull come across to me as another Stoke City, they are a good physical team and will fight for every ball and possession. I don't mean like Stoke in a bad way. They will stay up this year.

Key performers today were James McCarthy and Kevin Mirallas, Mirallas played really well, his best performance this season and McCarthy never wasted a ball and used his vision superbly.

Coleman, Baines, Barry also played well and done their jobs respectively.

Pienaar made an instant impact and slotted back into midfield like he'd never been away, really impressed with Pienaar today despite lacking match practice.

The team were good and the only bad things I could pick up on was Distin at times who looked nervous sometimes, wasn't his usual consistent self and left his marker once or twice allowing them free headers.

Hull weren't a bad team and came for a win, they can walk away from this with their heads held high. Well done to them.

I'm still out so I will come back on later and engage properly.

Cheers

There was a lack of penetration in the final third today. Hull sat deep and looked for a counter. Very similar to how West Brom set up. We are going to see a lot of games like this, this campaign.

Ross the boss couldnt really get into it and Osman on the left was pretty poor as as an attacking outlet for Baines. Jagielkas distribution was absolutely shocking all game. Coleman couldnt seem to get forward. I thought Hull stood firm. What is pleasing is that we got the 3 points against a team we would expect to beat. Under Moyes we would have dropped points today.

I thought Barry was fantastic in the opening half an hour and Mccarthy really stepped up in the second. He had a great game.

I was driving over the Forth Road Bridge today en-route to the enigma that is Central Park, Cowdenbeath, when my son said "what do you think the Everton score will be today". I replied 2-1 Everton, goals from Mirallas and Lukaku. Not far away. (y)

It works better when we have the lead

Hull had to chase because they needed the ball

While I don't agree with your criticism of the change in style, Mikey. I agree with this post.

Passing for passing's sake is silly, but I'd prefer we keep it on the carpet unless it's beneficial to go long or of course a last ditch clearance.

What else I noticed as well was when he had the ball in the final 1/3 we seemed to stop dead on the ball or there was lack of movement and runs. Barkley ran at them but had to stop and turn back because there was no support or no one with him.

It happened at throw ins, it happened when our midfielders had the ball and the only option was Lukaku who had a lot of work to do.

It's pointless when we're behind or when the score is level because the opposition just sit back and let us pass it. West Brom kept their distance and said "Go on then, do something" and that's why we didn't get anywhere with it

When we went 2-1 up, Hull needed to chase and they got visibly more tired as the half wore on, more so than if we had tried to employ a different tactic.

We desperately need a Plan B though for when situations like West Brom and Cardiff happen
