Koeman:
"I'm really disappointed ...it wasn't good enough.... At least we got one point but at this final part of the season it is not enough. We want to fight for Europe and it is not a step forward"

Martinez:
"We overcame that with incredible fight and determination to get a positive result... we found a way to compete against a good Southampton side."

Yes as defenders no as attackers. They came to prominence for there attacking prowess rather than anything defensively.
Bobbins.

It wasn't that long ago that the quartet of Baines, Distin, Jags and Coleman was one of the meanest (i.e. very few goals conceded) defensive units in the league. We've never adequately replaced Distin's speed and aerial dominance, but the other three were by no means poor defenders. And I say that as someone who doesn't rate Jags.

Right, so Moyes was going to play Baines up front for United was he?
news to me
That defence was rock solid three years ago, now it's Wigan on toast
3 years is 3 years and quite a bit of time in football. Baines is nowhere near the player he was and Coleman has not progressed and I still stand by what I say in that they are average at defending. Under Moyes we had the entire midfield defending also so that's why we appeared more solid. Now we are trying to be more expansive and rely on defenders moreso to have the ability to defend and not to be totally dependant on the midfield. Our set up now compared to Moyes does leave the defence more exposed and you can now see that Coleman and Baines are not great defensively. Well that's the way I see it but you are entitled to see it a different way. Baines was brilliant at free kicks, penalties and bombing forward to link up and Coleman is good at bombing forward and coming up with the odd goal and they were rightly given the plaudits they deserved for that but defensively.....different story for me.

Well we have to agree to disagree. Our midfield also helped out a lot more then.

All we need is spirit for the game. That's something we are lacking clearly, no fight, no team spirit and not looking like a team who believe they can win things.

I think in any scenario today's game was always not going to be a great victory because the Derby sadly is more important to get a result in but Watford and Palace we have to play them if we get through, on the showing as recent as the last week, I wouldn't expect us to lift the cup.
Thats a key thing thats been missing for a while now - fighting spirit. If the players can't show that in the next 2 games I'll despair. But to be honest I won't be surprised if it isn't demonstrated.

Think another thing though is, under Moyes our defenders were expected to just clear our lines when under pressure, under Martinez he expects them to keep hold of the ball and play it out, so more chance of making mistakes.
