Well we should have won that . I was really impressed with Ryan Astley , 16 , starting his first game at 5. He looked good in the air, strong in the tackle , composed and the upper body strength to hold players off at times. He got too close to his man once and was easily turned but that’s experience. Denny and Gibson were other positives and I thought Antony Evans looked better when he dropped back into central midfield , getting more on the ball. Sambou continues to be enigmatic, a couple of good turns in the box to create space but then weak finishing. Henen too, just when you think he’s a waste he scores a well taken goal .
We must have a few injuries around given the line up , players like Hornby in different position and the youngsters playing .

..I mentioned Mampala before that game, very decent finish. I’d be very surprised if he’s not contracted for a few seasons.
I see Mampala came on for the U23s second half,he looked lively but playing out wide when he’s better in the middle . I’m still not sure about him mate. He’s scored a number of goals, some of them good ones but he’s missed a few easy chances too. Maybe that’s what you expect of someone of his age and he deserves a contract to see if he can progress, but for me so far he’s in the Delial Brewster/ Callum Dyson class, scores goals but is he going to get an u 23 place and then push on.
I see Joe Hilton has been given a contract. Denny , Hornby will be certs, Ouzounidis too quite likely , Mampala would be 5 . Six , maybe seven would be the max I think.

Just got back from the game. In terms of skill on the ball we were obviously far better but lacked the final ball far too often.

Was only really impressed by Gibson.

Must just be looking to give boys experience now and not as interested in winning the league as they could have used Kenny who wasn't involved at all yesterday and Holgate and Baningime who were unused subs.

..I think at that age it’s also lots to do with athleticism and size. The very best, though, have real quality and I think your underlying judgement is right.

Goalscorers have a unique skill set and I really don’t see it in any of this crop, or even the likes of DCL. They have a picture of the goal and the goalkeeper, they don’t have to look up and they invariably finish in that couple of feet either side of each post. In the last game at Goodison, the RB thread a great angled ball behind the back four for Hornby. I got the impression Hornby was bursting a gut to get on the end of it, but a goalscorer bursts a gut to get on the end of it and clip it beyond the keeper. Hornby reached the ball but with no consequence.

It’s what goalscorers do. If you have that pace and athleticism as well it’s perfection, but a Thierry Henry is very rare.

Ryan Astley one of the Welsh youngsters we have seems to have come from nowhere cant even remember seeing him when I've watched the odd u18s this season .

You can kind of see it in Tosun. Even when he misses he misses well. The last time we had that was Jelavic, where all he wanted to do was score.

What strikes me with Hornby is his size, he looks about 6 ft 2 and could keep growing. He's kicked on a fair bit, but it's true you can't teach it really.

He's played a few games for the 18's. There's another user 16 who's well thought of, Bobby something I can't remember the surname.

Astley captains Wales under 16's and we have 3-4 Everton players in that squad. He's the best currently buy they all have done well.

It's been a quiet couple of years at youth level, but this years 16's and the 17's look a bit stronger.
