Everton Youth Teams Thread

He's played a few games for the 18's. There's another user 16 who's well thought of, Bobby something I can't remember the surname.

Astley captains Wales under 16's and we have 3-4 Everton players in that squad. He's the best currently buy they all have done well.

It's been a quiet couple of years at youth level, but this years 16's and the 17's look a bit stronger.
There was a lad who came on as sub recently against Liverpool who looked liked he had played for the u16s that morning he hadn't even changed out of his dirty kit sure someone on here said he was highly rated think he was Bobby carroll

Great to read that about Ryan Astley from Unsworth. I actually reined in my comments on him when posting above, you can look a bit overexcited raving about a 16 year old starting his first U23s game. But there was a bit when he had the ball down on the right touchline , didnt hoof it but turned back away from his man and played his way out of trouble in a very composed way. He really grew into it as the game progressed. I think captaining Wales U17s is not only a measure of his maturity as seen by others but doing this job requires him to step up a level too and adds to his progress. Since we changed to U23s age he’s the first schoolboy we’ve played. One to watch with interest,

Goalscorers have a unique skill set and I really don’t see it in any of this crop, or even the likes of DCL. They have a picture of the goal and the goalkeeper, they don’t have to look up and they invariably finish in that couple of feet either side of each post.

Like Vardy against West Brom on the weekend. Hardly even looked at the goal, one quick glance several seconds before he hit it, then places it right in the bottom corner.

I wonder, however, what Vardy was like at 20.. or more precisely what was his finishing like.
It can't have been brilliant because he was late into the premiership.

...prolific goalscorers are usually the same at youth and schoolboy level. I think locally of Rooney and Fowler, but I think in days of old Derek Temple and Joe Royle were major scorers for Liverpool Schoolboys. In respect of Vardy, I know the scouts were circling before he even signed for Fleetwood Town (when they were non-League) so I imagine he scored goals aplenty.

He was released by Sheff Wed at 16 so he can't have been too prolific as a schoolboy. I've no idea really though, maybe he was tiny or something

I think you can see many players who definitely won't make it at Premier League level but there is also a litany of examples where that isn't the case, the most recent being Kane who didn't look special at youth level also what about Kevin Gallen - scored 100 goals in a season at youth level and never made it. There is no rule to who will or won't make it - Ian Wright made it in his early/mid 20's didn't he? There are very very players who are prodigies at that age and they definitely are not the rule for writing off players this early.

..there could be lots of reasons a player is released. I was one of those high profile prolific scorers in schoolboy and representative football. I signed for a major club and continue to score goals but I wasn’t for footy and footy wasn’t for me but proper goalscorers have a unique skill set.

I do think DCL will not be a goal poacher in the way Vardy is, instead I think he will develop into a player more reminiscent of Graham Sharpe. He will contribute goals always but his contribution will be measured by his overall contribution to the team.

Think I read something along the lines of less than 5% of players selected for England in age groups below 19 go on to play for the full side and only 30% are still in the game at 23.

Using me as an example I was school captain at 11, didn't get in my secondary team as everyone grew before me. Caught them up height wise by 17 but still lanky until about 22 when I filled out and could compete physically again.

..I always think it’s an advantage for a schoolboy to be born in September. Being a few months older invariably means you are bigger and stronger. If you see one of our academy players born April-August I always think they’ve done well to progress in their age group.

It is - someone did stats on it this week. Basically 50% higher chance of making it if September born than August born.

Read recently in Ireland that they are arranging groups by BMI rather than age and, as a result, have picked up players they would otherwise have disregarded.

And as an August born person I happily attribute my failure to date of birth rather than skill.
