Everton Youth Teams Thread

Link? His name is familiar, but is he well rated?

Sure Scully pretty much always started as centre mid for 18's; don't know how highly rated he was but maybe he's been told already he's not earned a contract which is good of the club as gives the kids more time to find somewhere else.

Cheers @Stephenlloyd @summerisle :)

Always a shame to see young lads leave the club, but unless he's really standing out he'd have a hard time making to the first team playing in CM. Best of luck to him, hopefully he'll get to play at Goodison again one day.

Not sure how highly rated he is, seems to have been around the 18’s for a couple of years.
Just seems strange timing, announcing leaving with 2 months of the season to go. And still in the hunt for the under 18 league title.

I enjoyed watching Tom play on the occasions I saw him. He's a tidy midfield player, comfortable on the ball and scored a great goal in the mini derby.

Unfortunately you have to be very special to get a look in even at reserves, In all honesty, lads who are under 18's and still playing under 18's very rarely make it at the club they re, and that is particularly so at Everton where we have a clear policy in moving lads forward even at the expense of winning trophies.

He's been replaced, by Richards (under 17) and increasingly Carrol (very highly rated under 16) and Astley (under 16). In truth there's not much more he can do in that situation.

The club letting him go early will be the decent thing to do. He gets longer to sort out a contract for next season which will be his main priority I'm sure. Youth football is a very heartless process overall.

A strange one. When I looked at yesterday’s u18 team there were only two 2nd year Scholars, Jordan Corke and Tom Scully all the rest of the squad were 1st years or schoolboys , which is unusual. I was thinking that a number of 2nd years have been told they are cut to give them a chance to try to find another team, and I was actually thinking that Tom Scully was being given the opportunity to prove himself, he played the other night too iirc.

At times he played alongside Sid Kerr in midfield and Scully was in my view the better of the two. But a similar player to Jack Kiersey who we gave a contract to last year and I haven’t seen at all at U23s level since.

As to the timing, we seem to be doing this recently for the new Scholars and those who have a contract e.g Joe Hilton the GK got announced on his dads Twitter but nothing official from the club. I’m assuming it helps them find new clubs quicker
if they know they are cut. Paul Tait and his coaches look like they are now getting on planning for next season rather than chasing a title, the number of schoolboys and 1st years in the u18 team is much more than in recent years. I’m impressed with what Tait has done this season after two relatively poor intakes with no real strength in depth. Yesterday’s four goals from Adedoyin was a good example, turning a talented wide player into someone who can now potentially add goals to his game.

I think this is a good post, particularly in relation to the age of the players. Lots of names that I didn't recognise yesterday. A youth level in particular it tends to go in cycles. The last couple of under 18's year groups were quite weak for what we normally produce. They have been competitive at the top end of the league and had players moved to the reserves but by no means at the same speed.

It looks like the user 17's and 16's have stronger players, so we see a situation similar to what we had 4/5 years ago when the liked of Dowell, Ledson, Kenny, Davies and others playing well above their age group. Youth football is cut throat and they are looking at players for the first team. Even if a 16 year old isn't as good as an 18 year old, if they see him having a higher ceiling he will likely be moved up the sides.

Scully is very similar to Keirsey and that seems an apt comparison. I really liked Keirsey and always thought he was one of our best players at that level. But ultimately he lacked the pace, physique and power to probably make the step up. Similar seems to be true for Scully.

In his year group, Hornby, Denny, Ozadounis (sp) and the age group below Collins and Gordon have began to make themselves central to the reserve team. If you are left behind, it's very unlikely you make the step up.

The flip is, we look to have a good age group coming through again.

Antonee Robinson has been called up to the USA National squad for a friendly against Paraguay later this month. I seem to remember he played years ago at U17s/18 level , havent seem him mentioned last few years though.
He's on loan at Bolton and apparently bossing it for them
