We seem to be playing slightly older youth teams and absolutely steam rollering our opponents.

Which is fine but I think it just shows how big the gap is between youth and first team football is.

The likes of Dowell walked this league two years ago as teenagers. At 21 they are WAY too good for this level.

I think we are playing sides that are now more equivalent to the sides we come up against. Before this season we generally hhad younger sides out than 90% of our opponents when we would play.

Quite what's caused this is an interesting question. Undoubtedly there has been a bit of a log jam, in moving so many talented players into the first team squad. While we've managed it with Davies, DCL, Holgate we are partly there with Dowell & Kenny. It makes sense for them to play some games for the 23's and train with the first team.

Maybe it's a strategic decision from Brands/Silva. That we need to be winning leagues at youth level and getting young players used to it?

Possibly Unsworth has had a role in it. Last season was a shambles results wise for the 23's and the 18's, who went from being amongst the best to being also-rans. I'd imagine he'd be keen to repeat his success of winning the league again.

Possibly we have just not done a good enough job with recruitment, and find players like Browning/Galloway etc who should have had clarity one way or another and be moved on.

I don't think it's a bad thing though. There is clearly a high standard expected to get into this team and it's not like opportunities aren't there for those who are good enough. We've started 5 lads under 22 this season. Todays team sees 3 lads under 22 start and more on the bench. The average age of the team today for the first team is just over 24.

I like the fact it's a challenge to get into the team. That for a player like Gordon he can see where Dowell is at, and knows he has to be better than him to hold down a place can only do him good.

As you say Dowell was to good for this level a couple of years ago. There were mutterings that Unsworth was keeping some of these lads for the U23's when they should have been going out on loan. Walsh for example had a great season on loan at Yeovil, then we refused to let him go out on loan to Bolton, amongst others, then kept him for the U23 which he was too good for. No point steam rolling our opponents unless it's going to help these players get into our first team. Brands is going to have to ensure that we are doing the correct thing to develop these young players and make sure we are not just boosting Unsworth's U23's chances of winning the league.

Bradford have lost 13 of there last 16 games in all comps
