Everton Youth Teams Thread

I thought he played within himself, had the opportunity to drive forward a few times and seemed happy to pass it back. Hopefully a lot more to come from him
Thought he did ok , looked powerful , seemed to switch position half way through the first half and stopped going forward as much, might have been tatical to help the fullback.
Was that city number 11 the kid we are getting done for while he was at Cardiff?

So are you saying that the first yellow is not just a yellow but also a final warning, so if you make another foul you're off?

In a sense. (And yes I know wes Morgan got about 5 last chances in that scenario before he got sent off against us). But if there are persistent niggles, that would be a yellow in itself for repeat offending. But once you are on a yellow, you need to be pretty perfect with your play or you are always at risk

..Baningame the stand-out for me although I also thought Tyas Browning looked the part. I can’t see Browning having a future at the club and his loan spells haven’t been great but I can see a club coming in for him in January.

Adeniran looks like he has the physical attributes to be a player. I imagine James McCarthy’s inclusion meant he played in a wider position than normal but it will be interesting to monitor his progress.

I thought originally it was going to be a 4-3-3 but it seemed more of a flat midfield 5 with Dowell and Broadhead out wide. They were both too deep most of the game for me.

..neither overly impressed. I think Baningame, McCarthy and Adeniran did well to snuff City out in the 2nd half but the team lacked a presence up front and carried little threat. The plaudits are more for the spoilers.

Well Dowell - once again - didn't really impose himself on a game he should stand out like a sore thumb in. Broadhead I don't really rate all that much. Sambou is absolutely garbage. Very poor side last night really - would have much rather seen a few from the U18's play.

.i find it so difficult to predict the future of these youngsters, but I agree that if they are to become top flight regulars they should be starring at this level. I disagree it’s a ‘poor side’ given they had enough organisation and defensive quality to snuff out Manchester City.

We’re clearly interested in anybody who can come in and improve our first team squad and there isn’t an obvious candidate at this point given that a few of them are already involved.

Think you misinterpreted 'poor side'. I maybe should have said I was disappointed with the selections. It was a super defensive set-up and whilst it paid dividends it wasn't a great watch. Essentially there were only 3 attacking players on the pitch in Sambou, Broadhead and Dowell. A centre-back at RB and a whatever-he-is at LB plus 3 defensive midfielders - grim watching.

Think the side was picked on the basis of three players who needed game time, no left back, and a number of players who couldn’t be dropped cos we’d done so well lately. It was crying out for some individuality i .e Gordon but that was curtailed. An odd bench of 4 , nobody else there to make an impact , Markelo would have been just another midfielder, injuries I guess to Bowler .

I wonder if Brands will revamp the youth set. That brilliant young side that were dominat at under 16. Won the 18’s and then won the 23’s. But how many have really kicked on. I know they are still young. But a lot of the group probably won’t be here come next summer.

Again it smacks of sentimentality with loads of ex players involved.

City & Chelsea have had the best youth teams for years, to be fair we have competed well with both. But do we need better coaches to kick on, do they have ex players in their set up?

Great point. As nice as it is that our respective academy teams are top of their respective leagues, surely an academy’s success is judged on how many players make it through to the first team set up. It’s about producing good players not necessarily good teams. For instance even if we won the academy league’s league title for the next 3 years, it matters little if none of these players make it through to the first team or are sold on to other clubs for significant amounts. We’ve had Holgate, Davies and Kenny playing fairly regularly for the first team over the last couple of years, but you can bet Brands wants more than this.
