Everton Youth Teams Thread

You don’t celebrate for the crowd; you celebrate that your team is winning.

By running to the corner flag sliding on your knees?? His team were all behind him! Have you ever seen anyone run the length of the pitch, whip their shirt off and swing it around their head before doing a back flip playing amateur football down the local rec with maybe one man and their dog watching?

To be honest thats one of the most goals ive seen Everton u18s celebrate, they if you just even go back weeks, score, and almost walk back to the centre circle as though they didnt score-but injury time winner i can see why v Arsenal.Any goal, any league, any level you should celebrate/be happy etc for me.

Yeah, normally they are pretty low key about it, even possibly a bit much some times! I kind of like it tho, as if they know they've got more important things ahead to celebrate.

There are 12 2nd year scholars and 2 more that age Iversen and Hansen-Defratis. How many do you think will get kept on. So far I reckon the 2 additional players plus Simms, Gordon and John. The other 9 I suppose will need to impress between now and the end of the season but are any others particularly standing out? I think we could do with releasing about 12-15 of the u23 squad as they don't get much game time and have had a reasonable amount of time to impress. We have far too many players I think it's about 90 between the 3 squads which is the legacy of constant management changes.

Paul Tait saluted the link-up play between in-form strikers Ellis Simms and Kieran Phillips after the pair struck late to sink Arsenal in a dramatic Premier League Cup tie.

The young Blues were a goal down with just 10 minutes to go against the Gunners but Phillips equalised from the spot and Simms rifled home in the fourth minute of added time to complete a thrilling turnaround.

The 2-1 victory means the Under-18s qualify from the competition with a 100-per-cent record, having won three games from three in Group D.

Boss Tait with delighted with how his talented young forwards dovetailed in a second-half performance he described as “amazing”. Simms won the penalty that Phillips converted, before goalscorer turned provider for the last-gasp winner.

Between them, the pair have now racked up 39 goals for the Toffees this season.

“The first half was tough,” Tait explained. “Arsenal are a good side and they went ahead deservedly.

“The second half was completely different and the front two did really well for the goals.

"Kieran put away his penalty well, then put Ellis through one-on-one and he did what he has been doing all season. It was a fantastic end to the game.

“To be honest, we got after Ellis a little bit at half-time because we didn’t feel like he worked hard enough out of possession.

“He was much better in the second half – he actually missed one other really good chance that Kieran set up. But we always feel if we create chances for him he can score and that’s what he did.”

Tait revealed a change in approach for the second half was key to changing the course of the game.

Arsenal had dominated the opening period, with midfielder Matt Smith scoring to give them the advantage heading into the break.

“They had all the ball and we weren’t up to our normal level,” Tait said.

“But we had a chat at half-time to the boys and changed one or two things so we could get more of a press on Arsenal because they were dominating possession.

“We pressed them higher and with more numbers in the second half. We were a different team, really. We were really pleased with the reaction.”

The Under-18s now have a break from competitive action, with their next game away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 12.

The young Blues head into the Christmas break on a high - top of the U18 Premier League (North) table and safely through to next stages of the Premier League Cup and the FA Youth Cup.

“We’re in a really good place now,” Tait added.

“We’ve just got to keep doing the things we’ve been doing and strive to get better. Continuous improvement - that’s what we’re looking for with these young players.”

...i’m critical of too many ex-Everton players on our coaching staff but he’s a good lad is Paul Tait.

It’s always an interesting challenge trying to spot and figure out who we’ll keep on from the 2nd year Scholars, last year I think we kept 6 and let 8 go . So from the 14 you’d think it would be a maximum of about 8. It’s possibly too early too predict as youngsters often make a late season surge to get a place e.g. Mampala last season. I would start with a definite four similar to your ones , Hansen , Simms, Gordon and John. Iversen and Adedoyin would be next as both have featured heavily , but it’s hard to tell if they are benefiting from having other good players around them like Phillips, Carroll, and Hunt. But that gives us 6 if we include them . Then I’d take at least two 2 out of 3 current defenders , Joe Anderson and two who have impressed on the past but appear to be injured , Michael Collins and Elliott Richards. Only the Coaches see them every day and can differentiate between these defenders , so I’d say 6 minimum 9 maximum.

This then may be harsh on some who have featured recently like Pawel Zuk, Tom Warren , Barney McKeon , Ethan Warnock but they don’t seem to have made a significant impression. Similarly with Kameron Stanley the striker who I can’t remember featuring.
Kieran Phillips although not a Scholar also has his contract up in July 19, so another decision to be made.

I think given the goals he scored Phillips will get an extension. I would pretty much agree with your assessment on the rest and hopefully they will get chances at the level above.

U23 wise I would say Garbutt, Tarashaj, Browning, Pennington, Galloway, Charsley, Hewelt, Sambou, Renshaw, Mathis, Bramall, Lavery, Kiersey, Ouzondis, Mampala all need to move on. The older ones are just blocking spaces. The younger ones have barely featured so must not be doing enough. That would still leave some decent players staying and along with the promoted u18s would be a squad where they can be properly assessed. At the minute some players must only be training and that can't be good for them.

For me it was a statement of intent winning that game, and it's always different anyway when you score the winner late in injury time, as we well know.

Having North and South leagues at U18 level makes it difficult to assess who's best. So to go to Arsenal, who are riding high in the southern section, and come away with a win was a massive result for them. You could tell it meant a lot to them from the way they celebrated. Think it showed good unity too.

Very often at this age the games are dominated by players with individual skill. But this Everton side is different. Yes there are plenty of players with high levels of technical ability but they operate very much as a team. They don't have all the Internationals of the golden generation but I think they're actually better. Hard to judge really because 6 of that team were promoted straight into the U21s by the time they were 17.
