Everton Youth Teams Thread

Because whilst on loan he costs us nothing - the loaning club pays for him. Paying his contract up costs us dear...

not always true, depends on his wages if someone like port vale can afford to pay them. and if hes only on something like 2k a week we may aswell just pay it up, think hes in his last year now.

I'm sure Port Vale would pay 2k per week, but you are right, if he's on 5k, they wouldn't pay all of that, just part.
But either way, you recoup some money; and I think the club is tight/sensible enough to either want a fee or recoup some money from a loaning club. No point at all in just giving him a pay off, as far as I can see. My thought is he was playing last night to be viewed for a potential loan.

Even Everton have a satellite scouting system in Stretford -- right in the shadow of Old Trafford. United have so no such operation in Liverpool. "It's getting hard for the United scouts," explains an insider. "United still have a couple of exceptional players in most age groups, but it's getting much harder to sign them in the face of so much competition.

City also have a popular, high-profile figurehead in Patrick Vieira who oversees the youth setup and meet parents personally, just as Sir Alex Ferguson used to do.

Money hasn't always been the issue it has become. Ferguson would tell young players that if they were patient, they would get their rewards. He was right about some but, statistically, if a club gets one first team player from their youth ranks every season then they're doing well. Ferguson was happy for reserve players on £1,000-a-week to be around, but was that right for the players?

Players often got pay rises by moving, even to third tier clubs, but that was after it became clear they weren't going to make it at United. Many regret staying too long as they held out on to a dream of making it and think that their development stalled through a lack of genuine experience.

Pabbers, what's a satellite academy if that's not a daft question? Are you saying we have coaching academies all around the country as opposed to just scouting in different areas? I know we sometimes get kids from outside our area but I assumed these came to Finch Farm for coaching.

....I appreciate the question wasn't directed to me but 'satellite' in this context will usually be training a couple of nights per week at a local venue paid for by Everton. The kids will be schoolboys and the very best might start making appearances at Finch Farm or representing the club in matches at various ages of a weekend.

Very good opportunity for Kenny here + interesting he's called up a defensive player for a winger

Wonder which others will be going along with Galloway and Browning who were already announced

@philkecho: Jonjoe Kenny called up in replacement for McGeady ahead of Singapore trip

I suppose it could just be that he doesn't think any of our U21 wingers are mentally/physically able to make the step up yet?

Kenny has always seemed very calm and confident, perhaps the trip is just a reward for his progress last year and he's unlikely to play as a winger?

Is he still 17? I was thinking that based on Martinez' comments on Galloway playing Left back before moving into the centre perhaps Browning and later Kenny act as backup to Coleman?

He turned 18 this year. As @mightymoyes mentioned on another thread Kenny played all over the place for the U21s last season - personally confused as to which role he is being earmarked for long term.

He did look great as a RB for England during their U17Euro win though.

I think they hoped he would be a centre back long term if he grew a bit but this doesn't seem to have happened as yet and looking less likely. Long term right back looks like to me now.

How do you think he compares to Browning at right back for the future and how far away do you think he is potentially to be in the first team squad as backup to coleman?

Quite interesting to see if Martinez isnt signing a backup right back due to Kenny / Browning coming through and possibly why hibbert is here another season.
