Everton Youth Teams Thread

Onyango has got all the makings of a old school midfielder if we get his development right.
He looks as though he has potential him, he is a big old unit isn't he and certainly gets about the pitch getting stuck in but he was also getting forward and trying to pass it about.

Some thoughts.

Overall I thought we were good value for the win and 4-2 flattered Wigan. A missed penalty and another one that ought to have been given would have made it 6-2 and on the balance, that would have been about right, as we even missed some good opportunities after that. I'll take 4-2 though and coming from behind.

I thought we looked disjointed for a large part of the match and the were were dropping players back into a settled team. I thought Price played worse than he has for the 23s and was probably trying too hard to make an impression. Trying passes first time when he should have taken a touch, taking the hard pass on when a simpler one was available. So it was a poor game from him. Even so, you can see the lads quality in snippets. He always has time on the ball, just that split second longer than others. That being said we didnt see enough if him tonight.

Onyango is the other name to watch out for. Got better as the game went in, got stretched and he played deeper. It's odd as I thought Warrington was very good in the DM role but Onyango has more to his game. Covers the ground well and won a number of good tackles. Like Price, youd hope hed impose himself a bit more on the match, but came through ok.

I thought Whittaker was our best player. A clever player, gets between the lines well and was creative all night. I'm not sure about his body language though, which often seemed wrong to me. I'll be honest, I'm also not sure he will quite have the pace to make it here, but we will see. I think you need to have exceptional pace to play his position which I'm not sure he has.

Notable other mentions- Mallon. Not ready a standout name, a 2nd year scholar (albeit a younger one, still 17) and not one who's had any exposure at the 23s, but I thought he did well. Has a good size about him, not far off 6 ft, and has a good engine. I thought he did well. Hes teller than Kyle John, but perhaps not as skilful or quick.

Nice to see Jensen Metcalfe get on as well. I mentioned him a while back and is a player from our promising under 16s group. Looks like he will end up a decent height (probably 5 ft 9-10 now at 16 so hopefully gets to 5-11/6 ft). I liked that he didnt bottle the tackle he made.

I remember a few years ago someone said of Callum Connolly he was the sort of player we did well to create. I dont think if it's a strength or weakness of the academy but we do. We make lots of technically gifted, decent, hard work, good positional, midfield players. You have Davies, then you also had Ledson, Connolly, Rhys Hughes and Iversen in the 23s, you bow have Price and Butterfield in the 18s and Metcalfe and Barker with the 16s. We do well in that position, we obviously recruit and coach for that position well.

The issue comes I suppose, that theres probably not enough wow factor with any. They are all very solid, and will make league footballers, but hard to see where Everton benefit. Maybe it's me being harsh. One way around it, as we seem to be doing now, is you throw these lads up ages on themselves and they have to learn to cope, in speed and thought quicker, or get found out- and if they do, theres always another lad the year below.

In the 90s we had a glut of poacher type strikers. Branch, Cadamateri, Jevons, Jeffers, Chadwick, Rooney, Vaughan and Anichebe within about 10 years of each other. We seem to have moved specialisms to midfield players.

Anyway it will be interesting against City next round. I know people want to see us win it, and that it's the acid test, but beating City would be akin to that. They and Chelsea are the 2 "teams to beat". I think the likes of Onyango and Price may up their game for City. Hopefully Butterfield is back, and it's a shame Dobbin cant start due to injury. I'll be interested how we get on.
