Everton Youth Teams Thread

The sad thing about your “ My own view, is that we have been too reticent in giving younger players chances and it has cost us.” is that we’ve nothing to show for it at first team level in that we’ve hardly got a bunch of talented players ripping up the PL keeping youngsters out. I would qualify that by saying being young doesn’t guarantee you a starting place , and many of them are just not ready yet for the PLbut as already been said we haven’t got any kind of pathway. In the end Ancellotti‘s reign ended with “ No youngsters blooded in the PL and 10th place FFS.”

Unfortunately, we do at left back in Digne and Nkoukou for the foreseeable. And that's what all this saga boils down to really. What should the club do? Try Small out as a left winger and hope he fits into the role like Bale? That would be a huge risk taken on a 16 year old.

Ahead of Luke Shaw?
United play a lot of games and Luke Shaw won't be overly used. United opportunities and they know how to look after their young players, they take a huge pride in it. They try to get them experience and get them playing above their age wherever they can. Also, once a club buys you, not only does it come with certain promises, there's certainly an onus to try harder to justify the purchase.

It's not about being a first team player now. It's about getting opportunities and feeling there's a clear path.

Just to use some of united's current younger defenders as examples, Brandon Williams is a full back who had over 35 appearance for United before the age of 19.

Axel Tuanzabe has played for the first team 5 times before the of 19. He had a season on loan playing 30 times for Villa.

Teden Mengei has had a season long loan at Derby and was given his debut at 17.

Ethan Laird just played a season on loan at MK Dons.

I think we'll see someone like Louis Jackson or Jack Kingdom who are both a year younger than Small go out on loan this season.

As another example, we had 2 under 15's (Coby and Emilio) given about 100 minutes in total this year in our under 18s. United had at least 7 or 8 players who played at under 18 level, some who played regularly for a team who were more competitive than ours.

I've seen people posting on here about Jacob Beaumont-Clarke as a big prospect for us. He was released by United approx 3 years ago deemed not good enough.

Our academy is slipping away, we haven't recovered from losing Martin Waldron who aggressively pursued targets. I've posted numerous times about it now but we're not even challenging the more ambitious academies for top players and there's lots of these academies out there at the moment. Even clubs like Brighton and Leeds, who were cat 2 as of 18 months ago are aggressively recruiting and show lots of ambition.

Can you send 15/16 year olds out on loan?
Dont think I've ever seen that.

Wouldnt of actually hurt to of given him 2 or 3 games there last season, we could barely string a pass together

I wasn't aware of that tbh.

I know cat 2 clubs who send players out to non league so maybe that's where my confusion has come from although even they may not have been 16 when they went.

It mustn't be applicable to cat 1 clubs and EFL loan but the 2 players I mentioned will be out at the earliest opportunity as they're both physically ready or will be soon anyway.

…but could you not list Everton Academy youngsters by comparison?

Jonjoe Kenny us a full back who made his debut at 19 and has been on loan here and abroad.

I'd say the loans are the problem Eggs. Would you trust a club that's recently messed up loans for Kenny, Dowell, Gibson, Virginia, Gordon and to an extent Branthwaite. Kenny was England's main rb throughout his youth, made it to our first team and would be lucky to play in the prem again and isn't in the top 20 English rbs, someone with his youth pedigree shouldn't be in the situation he is

Not sure how you can blame the club for the Gordon or Virginia loans not going well

I'm talking about the current academy. I'm literally splitting the success of the academy whilst Martin Waldron was here and whats happened since he left as it's chalk and cheese.

I'm a big fan of Kenny but we payed a huge part in creating a top prospect with him and something's gone massively wrong since. He's been managed poorly and at the moment it looks like he's not going to fulfil his potential which is a shame as we had a great crop coming through back then.

Even now, the players people have hopes for are Small and Lawrence. Lawrence is only here due to the aggressive recruiting of Martin Waldron, he fought a battle to get him and won. We haven't done that once since he left in these younger age groups.

Players like Joe Gedldhart and Sean McGurk (Kopite) shouldn't have been allowed to slip out of Merseyside so easily recently.
