Everton Youth Teams Thread

They're not better than us going off tonight and they're certainly not better at developing or IDing their own talent at lower age levels. Reece Welch and Whitaker from their own back yard we have. They've only got Gelhardt who they stole off Wigan and Bate who seems to be in the Liam Walsh mould. Rest of them seem very take them or leave them players to me

Their model isn’t to develop their own if it’s not there; they plug gaps with talent like we should be doing. You can’t judge their players on a game I assume like the rest of us you didn’t watch. They recruit aggressively, so do the likes of Villa and Brighton, we need to as well.

Missed tonight's one but having seen some of the highly touted ones for England youth levels I'm not sure there's one you can safely assume is going to be a PL player or even that much better than our players (outside of Gelhardt and I'm not even sure we were eligible to sign him). There's obviously talent in Yorkshire it's just they're not good at attracting it. There's plugging gaps and then there's what they're doing.

Also not sure where the idea we don't plug gaps comes from, the problem is we've just had a summer where we spent 1.7 million on the first team never mind the reserves so of course we are short this season. Previous years we've signed Nkounkou-which only served to annoy Small, Adeniran, Markelo, Bowler, Foulds, Branthwaite amongst others. The rumour was we were in for Jebbison this summer, that would've been plugging gaps but also stunting the opportunities afforded to Dobbin who is probably on a similar level except homegrown and far cheaper

Brighton and Leeds need to recruit aggressively because of the lower ages being worse. Villa have done well but its still early days, they made their own bad mistake loaning Barry out when he wasn't ready this season. Nobody is infallible. Could we do with recruiting a bit more aggressively at the over 18 groups? Yes of course but the Leeds way has done nothing yet

Agree... there’s absolutely no guarantee any of the young players Leeds have signed will come through, same for Villa and Brighton. Recent players who we’ve spent a bit of money on - Gibson, Adeniran and Bowler not even at the club or no where near the first team show that.

Looks like progress has been made promoting the younger players to u23 and we currently have one of the younger squads in the league. They aren’t winning many but don’t seem to be being completely outplayed. This will be great for their development and I wouldn’t be surprised if results improved through the season.

Great to see Onyango back too.

I agree with you but I think Gelhardt, Greenwood and Bate are a much higher pedigree than Adeniran and Bowler. Although TBF Gibson was highly rated when we signed him.

cant believe the shouts to copy Leeds, they've had one decent player come through their academy in 10 years, they'll probably be in a relegation battle this season and when bielsa leaves will likely be stuck back in the championship

We're not talking about what they've done 10 years ago; we're talking about their shift in the last couple of years which we - obviously - won't see the fruits of till a few more years down the line. Wrap your head around youth timelines please and what their first team does is wildly irrelevant.

if we wanted all our youth teams to copy the first team anyone around the u23s now would have played martinezball, Koemanball, allardyceball, silvaball and Ancelottiball.
Just not practical

Leeds only obtained Category 1 status for their Academy last year , meaning last season was their first in PL 2 div2, U18s PL league north. No club can just copy another, but we should always be looking to learn from others. Ours is a different strategy promoting our youngsters from within , but Leeds also reckon they can attract these talented youngsters because they see a route to the first team if they are good enough.

that changes yearly so impossible

Well it shouldn't be impossible; it should be what we strive for as a club.

But anyway, that wasn't even the discussion last night, the discussion was about recruitment at youth levels. If the funds are there we need to be more aggressive at it. People talk about us signing the likes of Lewis Gibson but that was more than 4 years ago.
