Everton Youth Teams Thread

….the point is, he shouldn’t have gone on loan. He looked a real talent and we had no back-up LB despite Baines starting to get injuries. Had he stayed, he’d have got plenty of games that season. Who knows, the club might not have needed Digne. If I remember rightly, we then had Baines & Digne, so the back-up requirement had gone.

He was one we can say got away but to be fair, not many do.

Would you rather have had Digne or Robinson in 2019?

Anyone been checking out the young guy up front Sherif? Potential? Seen his cameo against Bolton..hard to say...looked quite developed for 17

No , the point is that he shouldn’t have been sold.

Antonee Robinson was another who suffered with a bad injury , came back and was a very promising attacking full back , lots of potential at a young age , but was poor defensively and at 18/19 would have been exposed against PL forwards. The two Loan spells at Bolton and Wigan were the basis of his development, they worked for him and he really kicked on in those two seasons. . Hindsight is wonderful but it really is poor that we then let him go and within months was proving to be one of the best left backs in the Championship to the extent that AC Milan nearly bought him.

Did we have much of a choice in keeping him? We had Digne (PotY that season) and Baines ahead of him at the time, and as far as I can tell only a year left on his contract. Would he have stuck around for another couple years waiting to get his chance? He's played another 2 years of Championship football since then to get to where he is now, games and experience he wouldn't have got if he had stayed as a backup.

That's why we employ a director of football. They should be two years into the future. Like Fergie when he got rid of Ince, Kanchelskis, Sharp and Hughes.....and replaced them with young lads......

Huge opportunity for us to do that -- take a look at the out of contract players thread i started the other day -- almost a whole squad out of contract in the next 2 seasons.

For any kids like Mills, Dobbin etc there will be places up for grabs.

An Everton Under-19s squad will travel to Oberndorf, Germany this Thursday 3 August to face a host of international opponents at the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe Cup.

In a condensed format, the young Blues’ first game of competition sees them take on Mainz on Friday evening (5.30pm BST), before playing Roma on Saturday afternoon (12.45pm BST), and then Freiburg (5.15pm BST) on Saturday evening.

Matchdays will be streamed live on the tournament's YouTube channel, which can be found by clicking here.

If the Everton team, led by Under-18s' Head Coach Leighton Baines, can progress past the group stage, they will compete in the semi-finals, and potentially, final on Sunday.

The tournament’s other group is made up of Schalke, Stuttgart, Palmeiras and Midtjylland.

Speaking to evertonfc.com, Baines is looking forward to seeing the young squad perform in a challenging environment, while believing his players will learn a lot from the opportunity.

“I’m excited to see our lads against different teams. You don’t always get to play these kinds of academies, so it’ll be good to see the different styles of play," he told evertonfc.com.

“The majority of lads will have been on tours before, so they’ll know some of what to expect, but each tour is different and will throw up challenges.”

The travelling squad will be a mix of Academy youngsters at different stages of their development, and Baines believes the weekend could provide a valuable experience – particularly for the first-year scholars.

“The new scholars will be going,” said Baines, explaining the make-up of his team. “They’ll join a squad that’s similar to what we’ve had this summer. Along with first and second-year scholars, there’ll be four lads from the Under-21s: Roman (Dixon), Frankie (Okoronkwo), Jenson (Metcalfe), and Isaac (Heath).

“For some of them, as first-year scholars playing against potentially a good level of first-year pros, it’ll be challenging. There will be a lot of learning, for sure.”

The young Blues’ squad for the 2023 Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe Cup is listed below:

Matthew Apter
Harrison Armstrong
Callum Bates
Jacob Beaumont-Clark
Jack Butler
Roman Dixon
George Finney
Harvey Foster
Isaac Heath
Douglass Lukjanciks
Daniel Maher
Jenson Metcalfe
Bradley Moonan
Francis Okoronkwo
Jack Patterson
George Pickford
Odin Samuels-Smith
Martin Sherif
Aled Thomas
Joshua Van Schoor

3 games in 24 hours? Are they shorter games?
