Everton Youth Teams Thread

Results are important. Players should be expected to win every game, not accept mediocrity and failure.
The result to an 18 year old is outweighted by importance of their development. All about looking at the big picture.

Ofcourse we want to win, and that should be the aim but in u21, u18 football you aren't winning every game but at least be developing their skills.

Shouldn't be getting beat 4-0 in the opening game like.

Was it not a young 21 side? With Mills, Cannon, Welch, Warrington, Luk Leban being out on loan? Can only assume there were alot of younger within the age group, and as such u18s would have been a fairly young one too?

As such the results aren't important but the experience of playing ages up will benefit them. Players going on loan and hopefully settling into mens football is a good thing, can open up doors for younger players to advance an age group, but the downside is they make take some time to adjust.

it was a young team but the problem is there was really no one missing to come back and help out.
this season would have been good to sign an older player in their 30's to play with them like Utd and liverpool have done previously.

Haven't they still got people like Kyle John Ryan Astley Liam Higgins and Sean McAllister to come in or can they not play this year?

It still comes back to it being a young side with 4 u18s starting and most of the others u19s . With 4 u16s in Saturday‘s u18 squad this for me is the way to go , play them up the age groups early to see who is progressing, and throw in some more experienced players to help. City , last years PL2 Champions, lost 0-5 at home , I doubt that they are panicking or anything.

If we take out the likes of Dobbin, Cannon, Onyango , Astley who’ll be loaned or around the first team we still have a number of experienced u21s who were injured/ missing eg Whitaker , Campbell, Hunt, Butterfield, McAllister plus some like Kyle John who’s contract I’m not sure of .

forgot about them to be honest, i think they'd like to send most of them on loan too if they can find an interested club. astley will definitely go out.

The official website says that there were 8 players missing through injury last night including Campbell and McAllister. Whitaker is certainly injured and out for a while and John, Mallon, Jones, Tierney, Butterfield, Barker and goalkeeper Graham have not been seen in any of the pre-season squads.
Incredible for so many to be out in August.

My guess would be some of the more experienced 21s were left out last night to make up numbers in the bounce game against Man Utd today?

That is the correct answer.
The young lads playing in the game today against Utd will have had a chance to show the manager if any are ready to move to the next level.

Winning at under age is nice but means nothing really.

….good to read Dyche was at the game. He was also at the Tranmere pre-season match when most first teamers were playing elsewhere. It suggests to me, Dyche is fully assessing what he has available to him. I have little doubt he will play youngsters if he feels they are better than he has.
Dyche is much-maligned for not picking youth players but he has never been at a club as player or manager that had a training facility and academy of the quality of ours. I think we are the first club he’s been at with a CAT 1 academy. As you say it’s encouraging that he’s taking the time to assess all the resources he has available.

There were a handful of u18's involved yeah but still.. getting legged 4 nil in the opening game by the local rivals won't have felt good for them either way.

Anyone know what was our ave age compared to their team?

Not arsed about whether we win or lose underage football, its all about the development. Unsworth got lambasted for trying to win the league every year and creating a good team with no stand out individuals. Problem with that is entire teams don't break through and you end up negatively affecting your stand out stars.

….it’s always a really good sign of a diamond or two if an Everton side wins the FA Youth Cup, we even got the final when Rooney played. It’s been a while since we reached that stage.
