Everton Youth Teams Thread

The 2022 Guardian Next Generation” is interesting . Our was the sadly now departed Ishe Samuels-Smith, but of greater interest now was Arsenal’s Omari Benjamin , now with our u21s and still only 18.:

It is fair to say Benjamin knows how to make a good first impression. Three games into this season he scored a stunning first-half hat-trick for Arsenal’s Under-18s against Tottenham and it was little surprise to anyone who has charted his early career. Benjamin, who is at his most dangerous surging infield from the left, has exceptional speed and close control along with explosive finishing ability; prior to 2022-23 he had already demonstrated those qualities for Wales Under-17s and as a prolific scorer for Arsenal Under-16s. It helps, too, that he is blessed with the strength to hold off opponents. He has shown a highly encouraging understanding with Ethan Nwaneri, the schemer who became the Premier League’s youngest-ever player in September. Nick Ames

October 2023 update Benjamin’s 2022-23 season carried on as it had begun. He finished top scorer in Arsenal’s Under-18s and was also on target in the FA Youth Cup final. A regular place in the Under-21 side, in which he has already featured both domestically and for Uefa Youth League games, looks well within his grasp over the coming year.

October 2024 update Left Arsenal in July to join Everton after not being offered a professional deal at the Emirates despite his impressive record at the academy. Tipped to make the breakthrough to the first team after scoring

….ever since a clever assist a month or so ago after coming on as sub, I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Benjamin. A terrifically composed finish on his left followed by a couple of tap-ins, I like him.

"New signing Mathew Mallon, a full back formerly of Everton’s youth system, was on the bench."

Matty Mallon seems to have signed for Nantwich Town in the 8th tier of the English football pyramid. Good to see him back on the pitch at least.

Chris Rigg, Sol Sidibe, Callum Olusesi & Trey Nyoni is in his position
I'm sure there all very talented (I'm aware of Rigg, not the others), but thats kind of my point, those players aren't on the cusp of first team football at Premier League level, which for me is worrying that Armstrong is.

No criticism of Harrison, but is the fact he isn't always starting at this level a clear indicator he shouldn't yet be playing first team football for Everton?
He started a few days earlier in the 2-0 loss against Sweden, at this level for such tournaments they rotate players eg Lukjanciks started against Ukraine but was on the bench v Sweden ie they won’t always start. Having said that Harrison has very much flown under the England radar and he was a late call up , it’s nice for him to get the recognition but England selection is only a part of his development.

Well two of them play for Arsenal and Spurs, so little harder to breach their first team... and the other is starting to play for Stoke.

You can be good enough for Everton but not as good as Arsenal youngsters etc.

That’s a strange perspective to have, and I don’t understand your worry. He's shown he's a player with potential but with a degree of rawness still, and our coaches/ manager are giving him opportunities, we’re usually complaining about they're not being given opportunities!

….from what I can see, he’s not come through the ranks at international level. When I was playing representative football, it was pretty much U15, U23 and bits of U21 at international level but it seems they have a team at most age groups so the same players often transition through each year.

Probably a difficult cycle to break into but his inclusion at Everton has alerted the selectors.

Players develop at different stages also.
The number of the most highly rated under 14s, under16s that become top players is relatively few. I do think as well that highly rated young lads with bigger clubs keep their places longer in the international set up even if their development has stalled.

It is more encouraging to see young players starting to break through from 18 onwards as they are coming at the right age and are close to an age where you can get first team experience.

…true, although I like my young footballers to have an international pedigree, particularly at u15 level.
